Women's Lacrosse Taken Down by New Haven

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight game on Wednesday to nationally ranked #24 New Haven by a final score of 17-6. The Chargers improved to 5-0 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) play with the win, while the Hawks fell to 3-2 with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After neither team scored over the first five minutes of action, senior Abigail Christmas (Elmira, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the game's opening goal to put Saint Anselm in front, 1-0.
  • New Haven answered with two goals in a 42-second span. Lindsey Belmonte and Katie Schenk each scored as the Chargers took the lead.
  • A little over a minute later, senior Jaycie Balboni (Billerica, Mass.) drove to the cage for the Hawks and finished to tie it up at 2-2.
  • Helena Dunwoody helped the Chargers regain the lead with her first goal of the game with six minutes left in the first quarter.
  • With 4:10 remaining in the period, freshman Ayla McDermod (Hanover, Mass.) tied it back up at 3-3 for the Hawks with a high bounce shot that picked out the top right corner.
  • Dunwoody added her second goal with 1:22 left in the first to give New Haven a 4-3 advantage heading into the second quarter.
  • The second and third period belonged to the Chargers as they outscored the Hawks during those two frames, 10-0. Caitlin Seleny, Gianna Caprioli, and Dunwoody all scored in the second quarter for the visitors, with Dunwoody's coming in the final 30 seconds, as New Haven held a 7-3 lead at halftime.
  • The Chargers continued their offensive eruption with seven goals in the third quarter. Six different players scored in the period for New Haven, including Caprioli with two more tallies, as their lead grew to 14-3 entering the fourth.
  • New Haven opened the final quarter with three unanswered scores to put the game out of reach. Caprioli added her fourth, while Schenk finished off her third on a player-up chance.
  • Saint Anselm closed the game on a positive note with three goals in the final five minutes. Balboni, junior Brianna Fruci (Walpole, Mass.), and sophomore Alyssa Hill (Brookline, N.H.) all scored in the final quarter for the Hawks, but they ultimately fell by a final score of 17-6.
 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • New Haven held a 33-21 advantage in total shots as well as a 28-9 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Chargers also won the battle in the center circle and more than doubled up the Hawks in draw controls, 17-8 (68.0%). Dunwoody led the Chargers with a game-high nine draw controls, while McDermod had four to lead the Hawks.
  • Ground balls were even as both teams picked up 15 in the game. Junior Julia Marsden (Norfolk, Mass.) scooped up four ground balls to lead Saint Anselm.
  • The Hawks committed 15 turnovers in the game, while the Chargers had 13 giveaways. The Hawks defense caused 10 of those turnovers, while the Chargers defense forced five turnovers. Senior Samantha Rivet (Sudbury, Mass.) posted a game-high three caused turnovers to lead the Hawks.
  • New Haven went 12-16 (75.0%) on clear attempts, while Saint Anselm went 11-14 (78.6%).
  • The Chargers went 3-4 on free-position shots, while the Hawks were held scoreless on two free-position chances.
  • The game featured four penalties with the Hawks being called for three. There was one green card and three yellow cards issued. As a result, the Chargers scored two player-up goals in the contest.
  • Balboni led Saint Anselm with two goals. It was her fifth straight game scoring at least once. She now has 12 goals over her last five outings.
  • Four other student-athletes scored once for the Hawks, including Christmas, who also added a pair of assists for three points.
  • Caprioli scored a game-high four goals for New Haven. Schenk scored three goals and dished out three assists for a game-high six points, while Dunwoody also scored three times and had a pair of helpers.
  • Senior goaltender Elizabeth Driscoll (Marblehead, Mass.) made 11 saves in the cage for the Hawks despite the loss.
  • Madeline Sage stopped two shots and earned the win between the pipes for the Chargers.
  • This marked the 26th all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm falls to 7-19 overall against New Haven in the series that began in 2001.
