HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Despite being no-hit in the first inning, Bentley struck first with three runs—thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a wild pitch, and an RBI grounder by Jake Maydak.

  • The Falcons tacked on another in the third when Jimmy Mitchell singled home Nick Pappas to make it 4-0.

  • Saint Anselm got on the board in the bottom of the frame, as senior Brendan Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) drove in sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) with an RBI single.

  • Bentley broke things open in the sixth behind a bases-clearing double from David VanderZouwen, immediately followed by a two-run homer from Brendan Sancaj to make it 9-1.

  • Jared Berardino added a solo homer in the seventh to push it to a nine-run lead.

  • The Hawks responded in the bottom half with a five-run rally. It began with an RBI single by freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.), and two batters later, sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) launched a grand slam to right to close the gap to 10-6.

  • Bentley answered right back with five runs in the eighth, capped by a Berardino grand slam, his second homer of the day.

  • Saint Anselm plated three more in their half of the inning off a fielding error and a sacrifice fly by Slauson, but the comeback fell short in a 15-9 loss in game one.
