MANCHESTER, NH – Saint Anselm baseball dropped both ends of a high-scoring doubleheader at home against Bentley. Game one featured fireworks from both dugouts—including grand slams by each team—but Bentley pulled ahead late to take a 15-9 win. In game two, the Falcons put runs on the board in five consecutive innings, cruising to a 13-1 victory and a sweep on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Despite being no-hit in the first inning, Bentley struck first with three runs—thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a wild pitch, and an RBI grounder by Jake Maydak.

The Falcons tacked on another in the third when Jimmy Mitchell singled home Nick Pappas to make it 4-0.

Saint Anselm got on the board in the bottom of the frame, as senior Brendan Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) drove in sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) with an RBI single.

Bentley broke things open in the sixth behind a bases-clearing double from David VanderZouwen, immediately followed by a two-run homer from Brendan Sancaj to make it 9-1.

Jared Berardino added a solo homer in the seventh to push it to a nine-run lead.

The Hawks responded in the bottom half with a five-run rally. It began with an RBI single by freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.), and two batters later, sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) launched a grand slam to right to close the gap to 10-6.

Bentley answered right back with five runs in the eighth, capped by a Berardino grand slam, his second homer of the day.

Saint Anselm plated three more in their half of the inning off a fielding error and a sacrifice fly by Slauson, but the comeback fell short in a 15-9 loss in game one.

The Falcons broke things open in the fourth, starting with a three-run homer from Stan DeMartinis III, followed by a two-run double off the bat of Curt Heath to make it 6-0.
