MANCHESTER, NH – Saint Anselm baseball fell in a high-scoring matchup against SNHU, dropping the final meeting between the two teams this season. The Penmen broke the game open with a nine-run second inning and went on to secure a 22-5 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Penmen struck first in the opening inning as Nater Wachter's swing sent a three-run shot over the right field wall.

Saint Anselm answered in the bottom half, with senior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) driving in sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) on a groundout. Freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.) followed with a two-RBI single, scoring sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) and freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) to tie things at 3-3.

The top of the second proved to be the turning point. SNHU sent 14 batters to the plate, collecting five walks, four hits, and nine runs to jump ahead 12-3.

The Penmen added four more in the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles from Ruben Fernandez and Jake Risedorf, along with a run-scoring fielder's choice by Wachter.

The Hawks responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, as Bourdeau brought home junior Shea Howrigan (Enosburg, V.T.) on a fielder's choice.

Powers tacked on another RBI in the fifth, scoring Scolaro to make it a 16-5 game.

In the seventh, SNHU extended the lead again as Jacob Albert cleared the bases with a triple, then scored himself on a sac fly by Jorge Burgos.

Burgos capped the scoring in the ninth with a three-run homer, pushing SNHU past the 20-run mark en route to the 22-5 final.

This marked the 107th all-time meeting between the two programs, with SNHU improving to 72-35 in the series. The 17-run margin was the second-largest in series history.

Angel Baez earned the win for the Penmen, tossing five innings and allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out three.

Jackson Powers collected two hits and drove in a career-high three runs—just the eighth time this season a Hawk has tallied three or more RBIs in a game.

Freshman Jake Schoenberg (Holliston, Mass.) delivered a clean eighth inning, retiring the side in order and recording a strikeout.

Junior Shea Howrigan has now posted multiple hits in back-to-back starts.
