CARY, N.C. - The Saint Anselm baseball split a nonconference doubleheader against the Adelphi Panthers on Saturday, suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 walk-off loss in the first game before bouncing back with a 7-2 victory in the second.
Game 1: Walk-Off Heartbreaker as Hawks Fall 4-3
Tied at three in the bottom of the ninth, Adelphi's Alex Rende delivered a RBI single for Panthers, plating the game-winning run.
Adelphi took an early lead in the third inning, scoring twice—one run on a Jack Tate double and another on a passed ball. The Hawks evened the score in the eighth, thanks to a
Brenden Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) double and a sacrifice fly by
Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.).
Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Hawks, pitching six innings and allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four.
Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) and Rose each collected two hits, with Harris, Rose, and Bourdeau each drove in a run.
For Adelphi, Jack Carr started and delivered five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. The Panthers recorded nine hits in total, with Bryan McCleary and Joseph Pellegrino each tallying two. Adelphi's defense also turned three double plays in the contest.
Game 2: Hawks Power Past Panthers 7-2 (7 inn.)
The Hawks rebounded in game two, besting the Panthers 7-2 behind a powerful offensive display and solid pitching.
Adelphi struck first in the top of the first inning when Joseph Pellegrino hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. However, the Hawks responded quickly as
George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) launched a solo home run to center field, his second of the season, tying the game at one.
A two-run home run by
Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) in the bottom of the third put the Hawks ahead 3-1, and Saint Anselm extended the lead with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by home runs from
Brenden Harris and
Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.).
Gabe Knudsen (Hanover, Mass.) took the mound first for the Hawks, allowing two runs on six hits over four and two-thirds innings, striking out six.
Cooper Hagen (Grand Rapids, Mich.) tossed two and one-third innings of shutout ball in relief, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
Harris and Slauson led the offensive charge, each collecting two hits. Harris drove in three runs, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Hawks (3-7) close out the Cary, N.C. trip with a single game against Wilmington (Del.) on Sunday, March 9. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.Â
