CARY, NC – Saint Anselm men's baseball opened their North Carolina trip with a 12-6 loss to Dominican (N.Y.). Trailing 9-1 after five innings, the Hawks rallied for five runs in the sixth but fell short in their comeback attempt.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Dominican struck first in the top of the first inning, plating two runs off RBI singles from Kevin Hirsch and Jaden Maia.

Saint Anselm responded in the bottom half with a double from sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.), who came around to score on an RBI single by senior Brendan Harris (Altamont, N.Y.).

After a scoreless second inning, the Chargers extended their lead in the third with an RBI single from Jean Nunez.

They broke the game open in the fourth, stringing together three doubles from Erick Diaz, Jeuriz Polan, and Kevin Hirsch, driving in four runs to take control.

Diaz continued his strong performance at the plate in the fifth, launching a two-run homer to give Dominican a commanding 9-1 lead heading into the sixth.

Saint Anselm responded in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs. Sophomores Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) and Declan Ryan (Hooksett, N.H.) delivered back-to-back doubles, driving in four runs. Later in the inning, a groundout by junior Steven Betty (Lowell, Mass.) brought home another run, capping off a five-run frame for the Hawks.

In the eighth, Dominican added two insurance runs off an RBI single from Jean Nunez, followed by another run in the ninth on a Jeuriz Polan single. This secured a 12-6 win for the Chargers.

Dominican finished with 15 hits, 3 walks, & 10 left on base. Saint Anselm had 8 hits, 4 walks, & 6 left on base.

The Hawks committed all four errors in the game defensively.

Anthony Leak scored the win for Dominican, finishing his start after 5 innings with 7 strikeouts, 4 hits, & 4 earned runs.

Senior Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) got the start for Saint Anselm, allowing 6 earned runs and 8 hits over 3 innings of work.

This marked Dominican's second win in the all-time series and their first since the programs' inaugural meeting in 2011. The Chargers now hold a 2-10 record against the Hawks.
