SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both games in its conference-opening doubleheader against American International (AIC) on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets used an 11-run fifth inning to take game one with a 23-9 victory. In the seven-inning game that followed, both offenses continued to produce with AIC edging out an 11-8 win.

Saint Anselm is scheduled for its first home game of the season on Wednesday, March 26th against Southern New Hampshire. It will be the second meeting of the season and the first in Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) play between the Hawks and the Penmen. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Sullivan Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- AIC struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning, scoring their first run on an errant throw before an RBI double by Nick Serce brought in another.
- The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the second when Sam Tanous singled home Brendan Edvardsen.
- A four-run third inning extended the home team's advantage, with two runs scoring on an error before a double by Edvardsen plated two more.
- The fourth inning featured home runs by Leandro Guevara and Yeudy Ramirez as AIC tacked on three more runs to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
- Saint Anselm got on the board in the fifth when sophomore Alex Razzaboni (Brookline, N.H.) and junior Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) each scored on wild pitches.
- AIC responded with an explosive 11-run fifth inning, highlighted by grand slams from Aiden Streeter and Guevara. Serce also added a solo homer, while a two-RBI single by Josh Frometa rounded out the scoring and pushed the Yellow Jackets' lead to 21-2.
- The Hawks continued to fight in the sixth as freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) drove in sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) with a single.
- Freshman Jackson Powers (Woburn, Mass.) followed that up for Saint Anselm with a two-run double and then scored on an RBI single by senior Jax Budgell (Newburyport, Mass.).
- The Hawks plated three more runs in the seventh inning. A wild pitch allowed Slauson to score before senior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) launched a two-run home run to left, bringing Saint Anselm's total to nine runs.
- AIC added two more runs in the bottom half of the seventh with an RBI double from Frometa and an RBI single by Kiernan Caffrey. The final two innings remained scoreless as the Yellow Jackets secured a 23-9 victory in game one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):
- AIC finished with 23 runs on 18 hits and nine walks while leaving 10 runners on base.
- Saint Anselm scored nine runs on 11 hits and six walks while leaving nine runners aboard. They also committed three errors in the game.
- The game featured a combined 29 hits and 15 walks, leading to a total of 32 runs scored.
- Vaughn O'Leary earned the win on the mound for AIC, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing six earned runs and striking out four.
- For Saint Anselm, sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) reached base four times, collecting two hits and drawing two walks.
- Powers notched his first career multi-hit game for the Hawks with a pair of doubles. He also recorded his first two career RBIs as well.
- This marked the 89th meeting between these two programs. AIC improved to 49-39-1 in the all-time series. The Yellow Jackets' 23 runs tied the highest single-game total in series history, matching Saint Anselm's 23-0 victory in 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- Saint Anselm came out strong in the top of the first inning. Slauson drove in Bourdeau with an RBI single to start the scoring. Slauson and Brendan Gonzalez then came around to score on a two-run double by Howrigan, giving Saint Anselm an early 3-0 lead.
- Bourdeau struck again in the second inning with a two-run homer over the left-field fence to extend the Hawks' lead to 5-0.
- AIC responded in the bottom of the second, scoring twice on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a bases-loaded walk.
- Sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) led off the third inning with a solo home run to push the Hawks' total to six runs.
- The Yellow Jackets answered right back with a two-run homer by Ramirez in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
- In the fourth, an RBI single by Guevara brought the Yellow Jackets within one. Frometa followed that up with a three-run home run to give AIC its first lead of the game.
- Saint Anselm got a run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Slauson, but AIC tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Yellow Jackets scored on an errant throw followed by an RBI double from Frometa and an RBI single by Caffrey to make it 11-7.
- The Hawks managed to plate one more run in the seventh and final inning as freshman Xavier Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn.) brought in Howrigan with a sacrifice fly. However, the rally fell short and AIC secured an 11-8 win in game two.

- AIC finished with 11 runs on six hits and eight walks while leaving six runners on base. They committed three errors in the game.
- Saint Anselm scored eight runs on eight hits and two walks while leaving seven runners aboard. They also committed one error.
- Romel Roca earned the win on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, pitching four innings in relief while allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
- Bourdeau played a role in five of the Hawks' eight runs, driving in two and scoring three times.
- Slauson contributed at the plate for the Hawks as well with two hits, two RBIs, and a run scored.
- The doubleheader featured a combined nine home runs and 51 total runs scored across both games.
