MANCHESTER, NH – Saint Anselm baseball came up short in its home opener, falling 7-4 to SNHU. Both teams had opportunities to take control, but a three-run eighth inning by the Penmen proved to be the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SNHU opened the scoring in the third inning with back-to-back home runs to center field by Jackson Marshall and Jake Risdorf. Marshall's three-run homer put the Penmen on the board, and Risdorf followed with a solo shot to make it a four-run inning.

Saint Anselm responded in the fifth, scoring four runs—all with two outs. Sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) started the rally with an RBI double, bringing home sophomore Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.). Sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) then singled in Bourdeau before coming around to score alongside freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) on a two-RBI single by junior Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.).

SNHU reclaimed the lead in the eighth, starting with a go-ahead sacrifice fly by Risdorf. Joel Valera followed with a two-run single, extending the Penmen's lead to three.

From there, Cam Varney closed out the game and his win, allowing just one walk over the final two innings to secure the 7-4 victory.

This was the 104th meeting between SNHU & Saint Anselm, with the Penman moving to 70-34 all-time in the series, this being their ninth straight win.

Cam Varney picked up the win, pitching 3 1/3 hitless innings of relief, allowing only a single walk while picking up four strikeouts.

Sophomore Caden Smith (Lowell, Mass.) pitched two solid innings of relief, with no earned runs, two hits allowed, & two strikeouts.

Freshman Josh Bryant (Plymouth, Mass.) also finished a scoreless 1 2/3 innings of relief with only one hit allowed and three strikeouts.

Brendan Gonzalez extended his hit streak to 16 games with two hits in four at-bats, also drawing a walk in the game.

Mavrick Bourdeau also extended his hit streak to 9 games, with George Slauson & Ben Rose extending their respective streaks to 7 games.
