Baseball Falls to SNHU in Final Tune-Up Before Conference Play

HOOKSETT, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to Southern New Hamphire in their final game before the start of Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) play this weekend. The Hawks held the lead twice, but a five-run sixth inning and a four-run eighth inning powered the Penmen to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) set the tone for Saint Anselm with a leadoff double in the top of the first inning. He scored the game's first run on a double by sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.).
  • SNHU responded in the bottom of the second. A sacrifice fly by Evan Kaplo brought home Jackson Marshall to tie the game.
  • The Hawks regained the lead in the fourth when graduate student Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) delivered an RBI single that scored freshman Peter Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.) from second.
  • The Penmen took control in the sixth, starting with a leadoff home run from Natar Wachter that evened the score. They added four more runs in the inning, fueled by a two-run double from Chris Leone and a two-run single from Jorge Burgos.
  • SNHU extended its lead with another offensive outburst in the eighth, highlighted by RBI hits from Jacob Albert, Jancarlos Colon, and Wachter. Jake Risedorf capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly, sealing a 10-2 victory for the Penmen.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • SNHU finished with 10 runs on 10 hits and five walks while leaving eight runners on base.
  • Saint Anselm scored twice on six hits and a pair of walks while leaving seven runners stranded. All six of the Hawks' hits came from different players. They also committed two errors in the game.
  • Fischer recorded his first career run scored in his first career start at Saint Anselm. 
  • Austin Trumpour earned the win on the mound for the Penmen. He threw for seven innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out five.
  • Sophomore Caden Smith (Lowell, Mass.) started for Saint Anselm. He lasted 5.2 innings and surrendered six earned runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three.
  • This matchup marked the 103rd meeting between Saint Anselm and SNHU. The Hawks fall to 34-69 in the all-time series. The victory also extended SNHU's winning streak to eight games against the Hawks.
