Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader at Slippery Rock to earn their first win of the four-game series. After a high-scoring 14-8 loss in seven innings in game one, the Hawks bounced back with a 4-2 victory in a low-scoring, nine-inning game two. Freshman Gabe Knudsen (Hanover, Mass.) earned the win on the mound after pitching five innings and striking out six, while freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) drove in two runs for the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • Slippery Rock got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Michael Kitko.
  • Saint Anselm quickly responded in the second inning as sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run.
  • In the bottom of the second, Slippery Rock extended their lead with a two-run single from Cam Panyko Morris, followed by a sacrifice fly from Clay Wiesen. Morris stole home after a throw went to second on a stolen base by Jimmy Sadler, who then came around to score on a wild pitch that put The Rock ahead, 6-1.
  • Sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) got a run back for the Hawks in the top of the third after he scored sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) from third on a groundout.
  • Slippery Rock extended their lead in the bottom half of the third. They used a sacrifice fly, two singles, and a double to bring in four runs, pushing their lead to 10-2.
  • Junior Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) led off the fourth inning for Saint Anselm with a double. He scored on a triple by junior Steven Betty (Lowell, Mass.), who then touched home after an error, which cut the deficit to 10-4 for the Hawks.
  • Stone Powell answered for The Rock in the bottom fo the fourth. He launched a solo home run to left field, which made it a seven-run game.
  • Betty struck again for the Hawks in the top of the fifth. He drove in two runs with another triple to right-center field and scored after an RBI single by Bourdeau, which made it 11-7.
  • Powell once again responded for Slippery Rock in the bottom of the fifth. This time, he smacked an RBI double to right field that provided his team with an insurance run.
  • Gonzalez led off the sixth inning with a double for the visitors. Sophomore Alex Razzaboni (Brookline, N.H.) drove him in with an RBI single to left, cutting the deficit back down to four runs.
  • In the bottom half of the sixth, Kitko crushed a two-run homer over the left-field fence for Slippery Rock. That gave him his third and fourth RBIs of the afternoon and made it 14-8.
  • Saint Anselm managed to draw a walk in the final inning, but was unable to record a hit or run as the game ended with Slippery Rock securing the win by a six-run margin.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):
  • The two teams combined for 10 extra-base hits with each side producing five.
  • Slippery Rock finished the game with 14 runs, 14 hits, six walks, and eight runners left on base.
  • Saint Anselm tallied eight runs on 12 hits and four walks while stranded nine.
  • Steven Betty was a key contributor for the Hawks, going 2-4 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored. His two triples in the game matched the team's total from the first 14 games of the season.
  • Rose also had a strong performance for the visitors, collecting three hits in four at-bats and scoring twice.
  • This marked the 10th meeting between these two programs, with Slippery Rock improving to 9-1 in the series that began in 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • Knudsen tossed two scoreless innings on the mound for Saint Anselm and struck out two Slippery Rock batters in the bottom of the second inning to keep the game scoreless.
  • Saint Anselm opened the scoring in the top of the third. Bourdeau led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Gonzalez, but the Hawks were only able to bring one run home. Slauson drove Bourdeau in with a groundout to first base that gave the visitors a 1-0 edge.
  • In the bottom of the third, Knudsen struck out two more batters to keep his team in the lead.
  • The bats kept rolling for the Hawks in the top of the fourth as McCarron led off the inning with a double. He advanced to third and then came around to score after Rose grounded into a double play, making it 2-0.
  • Slippery Rock finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Robert Herr started the inning with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kitko, which cut Saint Anselm's lead in half.
  • The Hawks responded quickly as McCarron launched a solo home run over the right-field fence in the top of sixth, restoring his team's two-run cushion.
  • Replacing Knudsen on the mound to start the bottom of the sixth inning for Saint Anselm was freshman Josh Bryant (Plymouth, Mass.). He pitched two scoreless innings for the Hawks and allowed just one hit to keep his team in front by a pair.
  • In the top of the eighth, Saint Anselm extended its lead after Slauson singled home sophomore Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.), making it 4-1.
  • Slippery Rock attempted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth. Herr drove in a run on a double down the left field line, but sophomore Cooper Hagen (Grand Rapids, Mich.) struck out a pair in the inning to earn the save and the win for Saint Anselm by a final score of 4-2.

  INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2): 
  • Saint Anselm finished with four runs, nine hits, two walks, and four runners left on base.
  • Slippery Rock recorded two runs, six hits, four walks, and stranded eight runners.
  • Knudsen earned the win on the mound for the Hawks to improve to 3-1 on the season. He tossed five strong innings while allowing three hits, three walks, and just one earned run while striking out six.
  • Bryant threw two scoreless innings in relief, surrendering just one baserunner. Hagen struck out three batters and closed it out with a two-inning save, his first of the season.
  • McCarron delivered with a big day at the plate for Saint Anselm. He went 2-4 with a double, a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. He and Slauson, who recorded two RBIs in the win, are now tied for the team lead with two home runs apiece this year.
  • This was the 11th all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm secured just its second win in the series and snapped a four-game losing skid against Slippery Rock to improve to 2-9 all-time.
