Baseball Falls Short in Saturday Doubleheader at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. After a pitcher's duel resulted in a tight 2-0 loss in game one, the bats took center stage in game two with both offenses erupting in a high-scoring 12-9 defeat for the Hawks.

  • Saint Anselm and Slippery Rock battle in another doubleheader on Sunday, March 16th. The day will begin with a seven-inning game at 2:00 p.m., followed by a nine-inning game shortly after the conclusion of the first matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • Both offenses started slow as the game remained scoreless until the fifth. Senior Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) started on the mound for Saint Anselm and did not allow a hit through four innings.
  • Slippery Rock broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with the game's first run. Cam Panyko Morris got on base with a walk, stole second, and then scored on an RBI single from Stone Powell, which was the first hit of the game for the home team.
  • Sophomore Owen McCarron (Holliston, Mass.) got on base with a two-out double in the sixth, but the Hawks failed to drive him in as The Rock kept their 1-0 lead intact.
  • Slippery Rock extended its lead in the sixth after Joe Purcell delivered an RBI double that made it 2-0.
  • Saint Anselm managed a two-out single in the top of the seventh, but failed to spark a late rally and ultimately fell by the same 2-0 margin.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):

  • Saint Anselm recorded four hits from four different players, with McCarron notching the lone extra-base hit. The Hawks left seven runners on base.
  • Slippery Rock scored twice on just three hits and left four runners stranded.
  • Gibbons tossed 5.1 innings for the Hawks and allowed only two hits and two earned runs in the loss.
  • Gage Gillott earned the win on the mound for Slippery Rock. He pitched five innings and allowed two runs while striking out six in the shutout.
  • Mark Wilbur pitched the final two innings and earned the save after striking out a pair.
  • This marked the eighth meeting between these two programs, with Slippery Rock improving to 7-1 in the series that began in 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • Slippery Rock opened the scoring in game two with a two-run homer by Tyler Cerame in the bottom of the second.
  • After loading the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the third, the Rock scored two runs via bases-loaded walks to make it a 4-0 game. Powell then blew the game open with a two-run single, and the Rock went on to add one more in the inning after a wild pitch.
  • Saint Anselm did not go away and started a rally in the top of the fourth. McCarron ended the shutout for for the Hawks with an RBI double down the left field line. Freshman Xavier Gonzalez (Norwalk, Conn.) earned an RBI with a bases loaded walk and sophomore Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) brought another in with an RBI groundout.
  • The Hawks added two more runs in the inning as junior Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) and sophomore Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) each recorded an RBI single. The five-run inning put Saint Anselm right back into the game with the score at 7-5.
  • The next inning, Saint Anselm tied the score at 7-7. McCarron drove in another run with a triple to left center and then scored after junior Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) grounded out to second.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Cerame put Slippery Rock back in front with an RBI single. That was the start of a five-run inning for the Rock as they extended their lead with three bases loaded walks and a fielder's choice that made it 12-7.
  • The Hawks got two runs back in the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, sophomore Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) drove a runner in with a single to right. Brune then walked in a run to make it 12-9, but the visitors grounded out to end the inning with three runners stranded.
  • Saint Anselm only generated one hit in the final two innings and ended up falling by the same 12-9 score.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2):

  • Saint Anselm finished with nine runs on 12 hits and four walks while leaving nine men left on base.
  • Slippery Rock ended with 12 runs on nine hits, eight walks, and five hit-by-pitches. They left 11 runners on base.
  • McCarron went 3-5 at the plate for the Hawks and was a home run shy of the cycle. He finished with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Brune recorded two RBIs without recording a hit, and also walked twice.
  • The game featured nine pitchers used between the two teams, with six toeing the rubber for Saint Anselm.
  • Hunter Loomis picked up the win on the mound for Slippery Rock. He pitched three full innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out three.
  • Freshman Casey DeLorenzo (East Greenwich, R.I.) finished the game with three scoreless innings of relief work for Saint Anselm. He surrendered just two hits and threw 35 pitches.
  • This was the ninth all-time meeting between these twp programs. Slippery Rock earned their third consecutive win and improved to 8-1 in the series that began in 2022.
