HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks would earn the first possession of the day on a won jump ball from senior Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) who would go on to score off a feed from teammate Katie Lemanski (Haymarket, Va.). Saint Anselm would explode to a 14-0 lead as Hoyt, Addisen Sulikowski (Saco, Maine) and Elise MacNair (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) each traded baskets with each other. Adelphi's first bucket would come with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter as Kaitlyn O'Connell would get to the rim. The Hawks would extend their lead to 18-2 as the quarter came to a close as Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) cashed in on a baseline fadeaway.
  • The Panthers would score the first bucket of the second quarter as Maura Carney would finally connect from deep. Sophomore Kaitlin McDonough (Wilton, N.Y.) stepped in and up for Hawks scoring on her first paint touch on a strong offensive board. Halfway through the second quarter Saint Anselm extended the lead to 23-6 on a made free throw from Hoyt. The Panthers found their last score of the first half from Victoria Morgan who slashed through the Hawks defense for a score. Saint Anselm would maintain a 24-8 lead going into the break.
  • Saint Anselm opened the second half with a strong lay-up from MacNair and a follow up bucket from Hoyt. Increased full court pressure from Adelphi would lead to trouble for the Hawks. The Panthers would cut the lead to 20 halfway through the third quarter. Saint Anselm found their response from Hoyt, who would score four points in a row for the Hawks to bring their lead back to 24. A defensive run from Adelphi would bring the game under 20 points with 1:21 remaining and end the quarter with a jumper from Maura Carney bringing the score to 39-22 Saint Anselm.
  • Freshman Avery Romps (Greenland, N.H.) would check into the fourth quarter and make an immediate impact dishing a post feed to Hoyt and connecting on a fast-paced pull-up jump from MacNair. The two teams would flirt back and forth with the 20-point lead before high pressure from Lemanski would turn into back-to-back steals and lay ups for the Hawks. Saint Anselm would hold onto their lead winning the match-up 57-39.
