HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Southern N.H. scored the first two buckets of the night with Stephanie Davis and Meghan Gordon each getting to the rim on downhill attacks. Addisen Sulikowski (Saco, Maine) scored the first bucket for the Hawks getting to the rim for a lefty lay-up. 30-seconds later senior Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) finished a strong move in the paint from teammate Katie Lemanski (Haymarket, Va.). Halfway through the quarter the Hawks would extend their lead to 10-4 off of a Lemanski steal and Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) finish at the rim. Saint Anselm would go on to finish the first 10-minutes of play with a 18-8 lead off of 10-point from Hoyt.
  • Saint Anselm would open the second quarter with their largest lead of the night at 22-8 off of a Lemanski drive and score. Slowly Southern N.H. would look to push back into the game with Davis notching a pair of makes at the charity stripe. Halfway through the second quarter Hoyt would keep the Penmen at a distance of 12 points with another strong feed from Forbes. A pickup in pace from the visitors would put pressure on the Saint Anselm defense, leaving them vulnerable to fouls. Southern N.H. would end the half bringing the game within 10-point on a Gordon lay-up from Sydnie DeVries.
  • Southern N.H. opened the second half of play on a 10-0 run capitalized by Davis scoring her 18th point of the game to make the remainder of the game competitive. Halfway through the third period the Penmen would take their lead back for the first time since the opening minutes on a made three from Abby Wagner. Saint Anselm responded with a run of their own as junior Anna Nelson (Gorham, Maine) hit a dagger of a three pointer with three seconds remaining in the third quarter, putting the Hawks up 54-49.
  • To open the final quarter of regulation Davis continued to shine for the Penmen scoring on a pull-up jumper at the 8:42 mark. Hoyt responded for the Hawks, but continued switch ups in defense from man-to-man to zone would lead to trouble for the home team. A pair of fast paced buckets from Davis and a strong pull up jump from Gordon would give Southern N.H. a three-point lead with five minutes remaining in the fourth. Back-to-back shots from Hoyt and Forbes put the Hawks back on top 60-59. The two teams would continue to exchange leads for the next 2.5 minutes of action. A single made free throw from Gordon with one second remaining in the game would force a five-minute overtime period.
  • Saint Anselm started the overtime period with a made baseline drive turnaround jumper from Forbes, but the Penmen would have a response in a made triple from Ava Winterburn. After a made free throw from Winterburn the Penmen would find themselves with a 71-69 advantage with 3-minutes to go. The visitors would maintain the lead until with 27-second remaining Hoyt would step in and make one of two free throws to tie the game at 76 a-piece. A time out with 1.6 seconds remaining would set Saint Anselm up for one more offensive opportunity to win the game. Queue in the clutch Hoyt who scored a drop off from Lemanski to give Saint Anselm the overtime thriller win.
