Opening Day Round Up: Saint Anselm Baseball Splits Double Header with Southern Connecticut State

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Saint Anselm Baseball split their opening day results with Southern Connecticut State losing the first game by a 7-3 final and stumping the Owls in the second game 3-0.

  • Saint Anselm takes on Southern Connecticut State in the series finale on Sunday, February 16th for another Double Header beginning at 10:00AM with the second game slated to start at 1:00PM.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • Saint Anselm opened their season with a Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) single after seceding the first two outs. With Bourdeau on first freshman George Slauson (Plymouth, Mass.) stepped up to plate and hammered a homerun to give the Hawks the 2-0 early lead.
  • Senior Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) toed the rubber to start the defensive strike for the Hawks doubleheader. The senior concluded a 1, 2, 3 first inning on two ground outs and a fly out to center field.
  • In the top of the second Saint Anslem would score their third and final run of the first section of the 9-inning double header with a solo-shot from junior Steven Betty (Lowell, Mass.). Southern Connecticut St. registered their first two runs in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homerun from Drewry and Staubley. The Hawks would escape the inning up 3-2 with one tabbed error in the inning.
  • The Owls would take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as a single from Gruttadauria would push the runner on second to home. After batting in the tying run in, Gruttadauria would be batted in from Fedeli double for a 4-3.
  • In the bottom of the 8th inning Southern Connecticut St. finalized their victory with both strong swings and reaching on walks.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1): 
  • Saint Anselm ended the game with three runs on four hits and had on registered error. Southern Connecticut St. recorded seven runs on nine hits and had three errors in the game. The Hawks left five runners on base while the Owls left seven runners on the bags.
  • For the Hawks, Slauson went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, a walk and a home run. Betty went 1-4 from the plate recording an RBI and run on the day.  
  • Reminder went eight innings on the mound giving up seven runs on nine hits while walking four batters and striking out seven.
  • Michel went five innings on the mound and gave up just one earned run on four hits while walking one and striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • The first inning started off slow for both teams in the second matchup of the day as both teams would go 1, 2, 3 at the plate. In the second innings the Owls of Southern Connecticut St. would earn two base runners on a pair of walks but senior pitcher Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) would tab two strikeouts to put the Owls away scoreless.
  • In the top of the fourth inning the Hawks would earn their first big base runner as Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) ripped a double. Bourdeau would reach home on a Brendan Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) single, giving the sophomore an RBI. The favor would be returned for Harris as teammate Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) doubled to bring him around the horn for the Hawks second run of the inning. Saint Anselm would end the inning up 2-0.
  • The final run for the Hawks would come in the top of the fifth inning with graduate student Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) hammering a deep fly ball out of the park for a solo home run.
  • Gibbons gave up his only allowed hit of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth inning as Gruttadauria would single up the middle, but the pitcher would escape the inning allowing no runs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2): 
  • Saint Anselm finished the game with three runs on five hits and committed zero errors. Southern Connecticut State was shutout with only one hit and no errors. The Owls left eight runners on base while the Hawks only left three stranded.
  • Bourdeau went 1-3 at the plate with a double and a run on the day. Dow also tabbed a 1-3 stat line with a solo shot on the day.
  • Gibbons pitched seven scoreless innings giving up just one hit while striking out nine and walking five.
