HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Southern New Hampshire got on the board with the game's opening goal less than a minute into the game. Derek Flynn blasted a shot on goal from the blue line that was saved by Carroll, but Jack Gray was there to finish the rebound for the Penmen to make it a 1-0 game.
- The home team turned up the offensive intensity over the next few minutes in search of their second goal. The Penmen outshot the Hawks, 6-2, over the next few minutes, but they failed to extend their lead as Carroll started to get comfortable between the pipes with several saves.
- With exactly seven minutes gone by in the first period, Saint Anselm cleared their own zone and sophomore Chris Cordeiro (Barnstable, Mass.) skated up ice in transition. Cordeiro flew past a defender before tucking a shot into the lower right corner to tie the score at 1-1.
- Shortly after that, the Hawks went on the power play after the Penmen had a player sent to the penalty box for hooking. The visitors were able to capitalize on the man advantage to take the lead midway through the first.
- Senior Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) sent a wrist shot on goal that was saved by Penmen goaltender Collin Berke, but the rebound dribbled out to senior Max Burum (Marshfield, Mass.), who was all alone at the top of the crease. His finish on the rebound made it 2-1, Saint Anselm.
- Southern New Hampshire tried to bounce back right away as they went on a power play of their own just over 30 seconds after conceding the goal to Burum. The Penmen looked threatening with four shots on goal during the man advantage, including three by Ryan Pomposelli, but Carroll stood tall with saves on all four shots to keep his team in front.
- After killing off the penalty, Saint Anselm was able to extend its lead to 3-1 with six minutes left in the first. Burum drove towards the net looking for his second goal, but was denied by Berke. However, the Southern New Hampshire netminder was unable to cover the puck and senior Richie Colarusso (Tewksbury, Mass.) was there to finish on the doorstep to put the Hawks ahead by two goals heading into the second period.
- Both teams opened the second with a fast pace of play. The two sides combined for 13 shots in the first five minutes of action, but both goaltenders were up to the task and made some timely stops as the score remained 3-1 in favor of the visitors. That span included seven consecutive shots ripped by the Penmen in a one-minute stretch, but Carroll was clutch for the Hawks with several huge saves.
- The two sides continued to trade scoring opportunities as the period rolled on. Saint Anselm eventually went on a run of seven unanswered shots on goal, but Berke kept his team within striking distance by turning aside each one.
- With just over one minute left in the second, the Hawks found the back of the net once again for a much-needed insurance goal. Saint Anselm caught Southern New Hampshire on a line change and sent the puck ahead on an odd-man rush. Cordeiro played a pass to sophomore Steve Armstrong (Victor, N.Y.), who skated in untouched and finished top shelf with a backhanded shot to make it 4-1.
- There was no shortage of scoring chances to open the third period. The Penmen once again made it a point to put pucks on net, but despite outshooting the Hawks over the first 12 minutes, 11-4, they struggled to get one past Carroll to start a comeback.
- With six minutes left in the game, Southern New Hampshire generated a 2-on-1 scoring chance. Tyler Murray froze the defender and beat Carroll with a wrist shot to cut the deficit to 4-2 for the Penmen.
- The home team pulled their goalie for the extra skater with two minutes to go, but were unable to get any closer than two goals as Saint Anselm closed out the game to secure the 4-2 win.
