HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Anselm found the back of the net less than five minutes into the game to take the early lead. Junior Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) carried the puck into the zone and slotted a pass through the crease to sophomore Patrick DeMarinis (Manasquan, N.J.). His one-time finish gave the Hawks a 1-0 edge.
- A couple minutes after the goal, Southern New Hampshire went on the power play after a Saint Anselm skater was called for a hooking penalty. The Penmen got off four shots during the man advantage, but Carroll came up with a pair of saves and the Hawks defense posted two blocks to help kill off the penalty.
- The Hawks closed the first period with eight of the game's next 11 shots on goal. Penmen netminder Sean Guerin answered the call and did not let one past him for the remainder of the period as the score remained 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
- The action picked up in the first five minutes of the second period. Burum and junior Michael Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) each had two shots turned aside by Guerin and at the other end, Jack Gray had a couple of shots stopped by Carroll.
- Southern New Hampshire also saw two shots draw iron early in the second. Gray and Coleman Nee each saw shots hit the post and the Penmen could not get one by Carroll to tie the score.
- Midway through the period, the Hawks scored twice in less than two minutes to break the game open. 10:09 into the second, senior Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) blew by a couple of defenders and drove towards goal. He slid a pass over to freshman Justin Tremblay (Becancour, Quebec, Canada), whose sliding one-timer from the top of the crease doubled the lead for Saint Anselm.
- Exactly 1:46 later, Burum beat Guerin with a wrist shot from the right wing circle to increase the lead to 3-0 for the Hawks. He received a cross-ice feed from senior Luke Mix (Winchester, Mass.) before firing top shelf for his eighth goal of the year.
- Saint Anselm continued to put pucks on target in the final minutes of the second. The Hawks totaled seven more shots on goal in the last three minutes of the period, including four during the power play, but Guerin made saves on each attempt to keep it 3-0 heading into the third.
- It was all Southern New Hampshire to start the final period. The Penmen outshot the Hawks, 10-1, in the opening six minutes of the third, but Carroll got into a groove and denied each shot to keep his team's three-goal cushion intact.
- With a little over 13 minutes remaining, the Penmen went on another power play after the Hawks were caught with too many players on the ice. Despite four more shots on frame, the home team failed to break through as the score stayed at 3-0.
- Ryan Pomposelli finally got Southern New Hampshire on the scoreboard with 10:58 left in the game. He received a pass in the slot from Anthony Marchant and sent a one-timer through traffic and underneath the pads of Carroll, who was screened by multiple bodies. That cut the deficit to 3-1 for the Penmen.
- The Hawks provided an immediate response as 36 seconds later, senior Hunter Brackett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) lit the lamp to put Saint Anselm back in front by three goals. Brackett intercepted the puck in the offensive zone and played a pass over to Burum, who had his one-timer stopped by Guerin. Burum collected the rebound and pushed it back over to Brackett, who rifled one into the roof of the cage to make it 4-1.
- 38 seconds after that, the Penmen answered with their second goal in just over a minute. Stone Devlin took control of a loose puck in the corner and weaved through the defense before beating Carroll with a backhanded shot that made it a 4-2 game with under 10 minutes on the clock.
- Shortly after the scoring avalanche, two penalties by Southern New Hampshire in a 30-second window gave Saint Anselm a 5-on-3 opportunity with less than seven minutes left. However, the Hawks only recorded two shots on goal during that sequence as the Penmen killed off both penalties.
- Southern New Hampshire got one final chance on the power play with under four minutes remaining after Saint Anselm was called for boarding. The Penmen also pulled their goalie for the 6-on-4 advantage, but all five of their shots were corralled by Carroll as the Hawks held on for the 4-2 win.
