Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Matyas Records Shutout and Assist to Complete Weekend Sweep at Post

SHELTON, Conn. – Sophomore netminder Julia Matyas made her first start of the season, recording her first career shutout to lead the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a 4-0 win over Post University in New England Women's Hockey Alliance action on Saturday at the Sports Center of Connecticut, securing a weekend sweep of the Eagles.

Highlights
  • Freshman Ava Hunter scored her first goal of the season, and first game-winner, early in the first period while also blocking a team-high four shots.
  • Matyas recorded her first shutout in a Hawks jersey, posting 41 saves, while also recording an assist, the first of her career.
  • Four different Hawks scored goals in today's game.
  • Junior Alexis Poppleton led all skaters with two points on a goal and an assist. This marks the first goal of Poppleton's career.
  • Junior Brenna Young scored her first goal of the season, the sixth of her career, and sophomore Nicola Forth also netted her first goal of the year, the third of her career.
  • The Hawks went 1-for-3 on the power play while killing off all four of the Eagles' power play chances.
  • Saint Anselm now sits at 31-2-1 in the all-time series against Post. The Hawks boast a 15-1 record against the Eagles on the road.
  • Saint Anselm sits in first place in the NEWHA with a 7-1 record in league play, outscoring conference opponents 28-13 this season.
How it Happened

Poppleton picked up a loose puck after it was tied up on the boards and wristed a shot that was initially turned away, but Hunter crashed the net and buried the rebound to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead at 1:23 of the first period.

Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the first period and the entirety of the second as Matyas kept Post off the board with 31 saves through 40 minutes of action.

Young finally extended the Saint Anselm lead to 2-0 at 9:23 in the third on a power play after sophomore Justyce Ohlgren sent the puck to senior captain Brooklyn Schneiderhan on the far wall, who skated towards the net and ripped a shot that led to a rebound inside the left circle where Young was ready to put a one-timer into the back of the net.

With 5:29 remaining in the game, the Hawks added another goal as Forth put home yet another rebound that bounced to open ice after an initial shot came from freshman Grace Stirling, who forced a turnover in the slot and sent a puck on net.

An empty net goal from Poppleton sealed the deal for the Hawks with 2:01 left in the game to secure the 4-0 victory over Post.
