Strong Defensive Effort Leads Men’s Basketball to 68-55 Win at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H.  – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team defeated Franklin Pierce University, 68-55, at The Fieldhouse in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
 
Highlights 
  • Saint Anselm wins its third straight game, improving to 4-1 on the season. This marked the 67th all-time meeting between the Hawks and Ravens as Saint Anselm improved to 47-20 in the series that began in 1984.
  • Junior Jack Medalie scored a career-high 23 points and recorded eight rebounds, three assists, one steal, and a block in 34 minutes. Medalie shot 60% (9-15) from the field and 80% (4-5) from the free throw line.
  • Sophomore Jovan Ristic scored 11 points with 13 boards for his third double-double of the season. Ristic ranks second in the Northeast 10 in rebounds per game, leading the team with 10.8 per contest.
  • Saint Anselm allowed a season-low 55 points, holding the Ravens to a 32.3% (21-65) clip from the floor and a 16.7% (3-18) mark from deep.
  • The Hawks also recorded a season-high seven blocks, led by sophomores Will Davies and Paulius Rapolis, who each had two. Davies also recorded nine points, five assists,
  • Saint Anselm outrebounded Franklin Pierce 44-37, leading for 32 of the 40 minutes in the game.
How it Happened
 
In a low-scoring start to the game, the Hawks went without a basket for over seven minutes before going on a 16-6 run that gave Saint Anselm a 25-17 lead. Medalie and Ristic fueled the Hawks' offense in the first half, scoring 11 and nine points each to keep Saint Anselm ahead by eight, 33-25, going into the break.
 
After hitting just one three-pointer in the first half, the Hawks opened the second with three long-range makes, one from Medalie, another from senior Josh Morissette, and the final one from sophomore Isaiah Griffin that put Saint Anselm ahead by 12, 46-34.
 
A stepback jumper from inside the arc by freshman Hayden Johns kept the Hawks in front by the same margin, 52-40, but the Ravens answered with eight straight points to make it a four-point game, 52-48, with under eight minutes to play.
 
With Franklin Pierce still within four, 56-52, Saint Anselm's defense shored up and secured the win for the Hawks as they finished the game on a 12-3 run, winning by 13, 68-55. Medalie had 12 second-half points, and Morissette had seven, while being a +9 on the court down the stretch.
