Men’s Basketball Falls on the Road at No. 4 Daemen (N.Y.)

AMHERST, N.Y.  – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team fell on the road at No. 4 Daemen University (N.Y.), 80-63, at the Charles L. & Gloria B. Lumsden Gymnasium in the final matchup of the East Region Challenge hosted by the Wildcats on Saturday.
 
Highlights 
  • Saint Anselm falls to 4-7 all-time when facing off against the no. 4-ranked team in the country, and are now 1-5 against Daemen all-time, losing four straight to the Wildcats.
  • Senior Josh Morissette paced the Hawks with 15 points in 33 minutes, also hitting a team-high three three-pointers along with two steals and a block.
  • Freshman Hayden Johns also scored 15 points in 23 minutes off the bench with a block, while redshirt sophomore Isaiah Griffin had 14 points, three rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal in 20 minutes off the bench.
  • Junior Jack Medalie led the Hawks on the glass with eight rebounds, and sophomore Will Davies recorded a team-high three assists with 10 points, two steals, and two rebounds.
  • Saint Anselm won the turnover battle, 11-17, and had eight steals compared to just four for Daemen.
How it Happened
 
Morissette hit a jumper on the first possession of the game to get the scoring going, but Daemen made a pair of threes and a layup to take a six-point edge, 8-2. The Wildcats continued to convert from long range, knocking down three more three-pointers as their lead grew to 12, 19-7.
 
Johns checked in and scored in the paint twice, followed by a pair of free throws from Griffin that brought the Hawks within six, 24-18. Daemen went on another run, capped off by a three-point play on a contested layup at the rim that had the Wildcats ahead 33-20.
 
The Hawks began to chip away at the Daemen lead thanks to a pair of threes from Morissette and a fastbreak finish at the rim from Medalie that made the score 33-28 with just over five minutes left in the half.
 
A 10-0 run for the Wildcats gave them their biggest lead of the game late in the first, 46-31, but the Hawks began to rally with four points from Griffin and a Johns' layup in transition that brought Saint Anselm back within single digits, 46-37. Griffin knocked down a pair of free throws and Daemen sunk a three-pointer as the Wildcats led 49-39 at the break.
 
The Hawks' defense stiffened to start the second half, holding Daemen to just a 1-7 start as a Davies layup cut their deficit to just two, 52-50. The Wildcats responded, as Saint Anselm missed 11 of their next 12 shots, leading to a 17-3 run for Daemen.
 
The Wildcats' lead grew to as much as 21 as they led by double-digits the rest of the way, defeating the Hawks, 80-63.
