Late Score Sends Football Past Post, 30-23

WATERBURY, Conn. – It came down to the final drive for the second straight week as the Saint Anselm College football team used a 25-yard touchdown pass from junior Drew Forkner to freshman Domingo Meade with 27 seconds left in regulation to secure a 30-23 victory at Post University on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

Highlights

  • Freshman Domingo Meade, the reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week, scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with 27 seconds to go, snagging a pass in the endzone from 25 yards out.
  • Junior Drew Forkner threw for 252 yards, completing 22 of 38 pass attempts, with four touchdowns and one interception.
  • Sophomore Jake Croce averaged 4.9 yards per carry as he rushed for 79 yards.
  • Fifth year senior Malaki Jones hauled in two touchdowns as he made six catches and picked up 82 yards.
  • Junior Kyle Verriest racked up a team-high 83 yards on six catches, scoring one touchdown.
  • Junior Tanner Wolfe led the tackling department with seven, followed by seniors Aidan Noke and Hugo Silbsy with five each.
  • Fifth year senior Dev Lee recorded the Hawks' lone interception of the outing and returned it six yards. He also is credited with one pass breakup along with classmate Kaleb Lewis.
  • Saint Anselm earned 25 first downs while limiting the hosts to nine.
  • The Hawks converted on 9-of-18 third down tries as well as 2-of-4 on fourth downs. Post was 1-for-9 on third down and 1-for-3 on fourth downs.
  • The Hawks improved to 4-0 in the all-time series against the Eagles, which now includes two road wins.
  • Saint Anselm evened out its road record at 2-2 on the season.

How it Happened

Saint Anselm got on the board in the opening 2:05 of the contest with a 16-yard touchdown reception by junior Kyle Verriest. With five seconds left in the opening frame, Post tied the game with a 17-yard touchdown pass.

The Hawks regained their lead with 1:50 left in the half as fifth year senior Malaki Jones recorded his first score of the game with a 32-yard touchdown reception. The ensuing PAT was missed, keeping the score at 13-7. The following kickoff was muffed by a Post return man and recovered by Luis Consuegra, setting the Hawks up on the 50 yard line. The Hawks would rattle off nine plays in the next 1:32 to get back in the endzone as Jones scored his final touchdown of the game from 10 yards out to make it 19-7 at the half.

Post's Nathan Hawkins recorded a 30-yard field goal 1:35 into the second half, cutting the Eagles' deficit to nine points. Nearly eight and a half minutes later, Post got in the endzone again on a pass play to make it 19-17.

Junior Michael Guarnieri nailed a 40-yard field goal with 8:52 to play, making It a five-point game in the fourth quarter. Post was able to score on its next drive, finishing off a six-play, 65-yard touchdown with a one-yard rushing score by Tyler Phommachannh.

Saint Anselm lost the ball on downs on its next drive, but forced a punt to get the ball back, leading by one, with 1:29 to play. After converting on fourth down on a pass to Verriest, junior quarterback Drew Forkner found freshman Domingo Meade wide open in the endzone from 25 yards out to put the Hawks back in front, 28-23, with 27 seconds to go. Senior Ronan Noke completed a two-point conversion attempt to Verriest to put the Hawks up by seven.

With one chance remaining for the Eagles, the Hawks defense forced four consecutive incomplete passes to secure their second straight victory.

Saint Anselm (3-2, 2-1 NE10) will play host to Franklin Pierce (3-2, 2-1 NE10) in its fourth NE10 contest of the season on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 6:00 p.m. Kickoff from Grappone Stadium is slated for 6:00 p.m.
