How it Happened
The Hawks jumped out to a lead thanks to a turnover caused in the offensive zone by freshman Lauren Waldo and sophomore Nicola Forth who set up freshman Grace Stirling. Stirling fired a wrister from the slot off the far post and in with 6:51 to play in the opening period.
The Hawks took advantage of a power play opportunity early into the second frame as junior Brenna Young slid a pass to the waiting stick of DeCoteau out in front who one-timed the feed into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 lead for the hosts.
Less than four minutes later, freshman Grace Littler collected a loose puck in the defensive zone and gained the offensive zone with speed. Littler then sent a centering pass to sophomore Eden Granley who sent it through the five-hole on a one-timer to make it a three-goal lead for the Hawks.
The Pioneers got on the board with 5:36 to play in the second as a shot from the left point off the stick of Shae Carroll deflected in to cut Sacred Heart's deficit to two.
With 5:41 remaining in regulation, DeCoteau recorded her second powerplay goal of the evening on a deflected shot from the slot which soared over the goaltender and past the goal line to regain the Hawks' three-goal cushion.
Freshman goaltender Kayla Czukoski made seven saves in the final minutes to secure the victory for Saint Anselm in the opening game of the series.
