Field Hockey Breezes Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 8-0

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College field hockey team, ranked No. 10 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Coaches Poll, breezed past St. Thomas Aquinas College in a Northeast 10 (NE10) contest, 8-0, on Tuesday evening at Grappone Stadium.

Highlights

  • Seven different players scored for the Hawks with freshman Breanna Shorey leading the way with two goals.
  • Five Hawks recorded assists with senior Maggie Burchill and sophomore Kelly Holmes adding two helpers each.
  • Junior goalie Mackenzie Wehrum made three saves in the victory.
  • The Hawks outshot the Spartans, 38-3, as they fired 26 shots on target.
  • Saint Anselm earned 19 corners, compared to STAC's one.
  • The Hawks improved to 9-1 in the all-time series against the Spartans, spanning back to their first meeting in 2015.
  • Saint Anselm has won its last three meetings against St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • In games played at Grappone Stadium between the two squads, Saint Anselm is 7-0.

How it Happened

Senior Marissa Politano got the Hawks on the board with 32 seconds to play in the opening quarter, scoring off a feed from sophomore Ruby Reid.

Junior Meghan Smith made it 2-0 just 2:23 into the second quarter, scoring off an assist from senior Maggie Burchill on an opportunity created off of a corner. One minute later, Saint Anselm's lead expanded to three goals as sophomore Leila Hartl tipped in a shot by senior Millie Forster off a corner opportunity.

Late in the half, the Hawks scored three goals over a span of 2:06 with freshman Breanna Shorey scoring first, followed by first collegiate goals from freshman Audrey Payuer and sophomore Alexa Garthee.

Shorey scored her second of the game 8:03 into the third quarter off a feed from sophomore Kelly Holmes, making it 7-0 before the quarter.

Junior Meghan Carey scored with eight minutes remaining in regulation following a Saint Anselm corner on a feed from Burchill to round out the scoring with eight team goals.

The Hawks (9-5, 6-2 NE10) will hit the road for an NE10 clash against Southern Connecticut State University (7-6, 4-3 NE10) on Saturday, Oct. 18. Start time from Jess Dow Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
