HOW IT HAPPENED:
- SUNY Cortland got out to a 1-0 lead after an early goal by Domenic Settino just 4:21 into the game.
- Midway through the first period, Saint Anselm went on the power play after a hooking penalty called on SUNY Cortland. The Hawks were able to fire two pucks on frame, but both were stopped by Red Dragons goaltender Ronan Mobley.
- After killing off the penalty, the Red Dragons got back to work on the offensive end and put a flurry of shots on target, but Saint Anselm sophomore goaltender Cam Carroll (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) came up with three saves to keep his team down by a goal.
- Those timely stops by Carroll allowed Saint Anselm to tie the score with under five minutes left in the first. Junior Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) collected the puck along the boards in the offensive zone and centered a pass to Reynolds, whose wrist shot beat Mobley to make it 1-1.
- SUNY Cortland regained the momentum by firing numerous shots on goal and creating chaos in the offensive zone. The Red Dragons eventually regained the lead with 20 seconds remaining in the first after Justin Legault found the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game going into the first intermission.
- The Hawks began the second period with the upper hand and outshot the Red Dragons, 9-2, over the first nine minutes. However, the increased offensive presence did not lead to a goal as Mobley denied each attempt, including four in a 10-second window around the five-minute mark.
- Midway through the period, Legault lit the lamp for his second goal of the night after slotting home a loose puck out in front to increase the SUNY Cortland lead to 3-1.
- After the goal, Saint Anselm had a player sent to the penalty box for cross-checking, but they were able to kill off the penalty after conceding only two shots on target.
- A few minutes later, Armstrong cut the deficit in half for the Hawks and made it a 3-2 game after finishing off a feed from senior Luke Mix (Winchester, Mass.) for his second goal in as many games.
- The Red Dragons provided an immediate response just 21 seconds later to increase their lead to 4-2. Settimo potted his second goal of the game with Conor Humphrey and Johnny Facchini earning assists on the play.
- The visitors were not done there and went on to score two more goals in the final four minutes of the second period. Legault completed the hat trick with his third goal of the game and Sam Christiano tipped in a shot by Andrew Clouden with 35 seconds left in the period to put the Red Dragons ahead, 6-2, entering the third.
- The Hawks began the period firing with three early shots on goal. Mobley was up to the task and stopped all three to keep his team in the lead by a comfortable four-goal margin.
- A couple minutes into the third period, both teams had a player sent to the penalty box. A few seconds into 4-on-4 play, Colby Seitz put one past Carroll that made it 7-2 ith 17 minutes remaining.
- After conceding the previous goal, Carroll started to get into a groove. The sophomore posted 15 saves over the next 11 minutes of the game as SUNY Cortland continued their offensive assault.
- With just over three minutes left, the Red Dragons added their final goal of the night courtesy of Nate Berke, which helped seal his team's 8-2 road win.
