HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • There was no shortage of scoring opportunities early with both teams firing numerous shots on goal in the first six minutes. Both goaltenders were up to the task with Saint Anselm sophomore Cam Carroll (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) making four saves and Southern New Hampshire netminder Sean Guerin making three stops.
  • After killing off a penalty, the Hawks struck first 9:41 into the game. Sophomore Patrick DeMarinis (Manasquan, N.J.) finished a feed from Linart to make it a 1-0 game.
  • The Hawks only increased their pressure after that. They outshot the Penmen, 5-0, over the next three minutes of play and went on a power play, but failed to increase their lead.
  • Southern New Hampshire responded well with four shots on goal to end the period, but the score remained 1-0 after the opening 20-minute segment.
  • Less than a minute into the second period, the Penmen were sent to the penalty box after a high-sticking call. On the ensuing power play, senior Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) scored to double the Hawks' lead 1:28 into the second.
  • A few minutes later, Stone Devlin provided the answer for Southern New Hampshire. His unassisted goal at the 4:57 mark cut the Saint Anselm lead in half and made it a 2-1 score.
  • The two sides then exchanged shots on goal until midway through the second, when the Hawks were sent to the box for a high-sticking penalty of their own. However, the Penmen were unable to equalize as Carroll made another two saves.
  • Just 32 seconds after killing off the minor penalty, junior Garrett Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.) found the back of the net off a feed from senior Hunter Brackett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) to extend the Saint Anselm lead to 3-1.
  • The Hawks blew the game open not long after that with Linart and sophomore Steve Armstrong (Victor, N.Y.) each lighting the lamp exactly 1:33 apart to make it a 5-1 game before the end of the second. It was the first collegiate goal for Armstrong.
  • The Penmen started the third period with another power play opportunity. They pumped five pucks on target, but Carroll came up big for the Hawks with some big time saves to preserve his team's four-goal advantage.
  • Carroll continued to show out between the pipes for Saint Anselm. In the final 10 minutes of the game, the sophomore made 13 saves as Southern New Hampshire could not buy a goal.
  • The Hawks scored twice more in the final four minutes. Junior Michael Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season at the 16:08 mark and Brackett found the back of the net 49 seconds later, which made it 7-1.
  • The Penmen finally got one past Carroll with 1:09 remaining, but by that point it was all academic as the Hawks cruised to the 7-2 victory.
