HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • There was a flurry of early action despite a scoreless start to the game. Senior Andrew Kubinski (Norton, Mass.) helped Saint Anselm start the match on the front foot with a shot following a corner kick, but his attempt missed to the left.
  • Southern Connecticut State generated a few offensive chances over the next few minutes. The Owls attempted the next four shot attempts of the game, but none were on frame as the score remained 0-0.
  • The Hawks created a quality look at goal in the 14th minute after senior Jack O'Brien (Norton, Mass.) played a through ball down the right side. Fifth-year Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) tracked it down, dribbled into the box, and cut a pass back for senior Lucas Bravo Ollé (Sitges, Barcelona, Spain), but his one-touch shot sailed over the crossbar.
  • The next scoring chance for either side did not come until the 39th minute, and Saint Anselm made the most of the opportunity that time around. Dresens finished his second goal of the season off a feed from Kubinski to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
  • The Owls produced the first few shots of the second half and also earned a corner kick, but failed to equalize.
  • In the 69th minute, Saint Anselm sophomore goalkeeper David Hood (Manchester, N.H.) made his first save of the match after Zico Groenveld put a shot on target for Southern Connecticut State.
  • After two more corners for the Owls, Hood made two more stops to keep his team in front, denying both Jose Clemente and Samuel Nagy.
  • Southern Connecticut State continued to apply the pressure and it paid off in the 81st minute. Jalen Jean forced a failed clearance by the Saint Anselm defense and stole the ball at the top of the penalty box. His slow-rolling shot made its way into the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
  • Just over two minutes later, the Owls were given a free kick near midfield. They dumped a ball into the Hawks penalty area and another failed clearance resulted in the ball rolling to Clemente, who buried the go-ahead goal from the top of the six-yard box.
  • Saint Anselm got one more look with just over a minute remaining, but the shot on goal by Hawks freshman Chance Prouty (Danvers, Mass.) was covered up by Owls goalkeeper Devin Juan.
