HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm was all over Adelphi in the opening 12 minutes. The Hawks outshot the visitors from New York, 4-0, during that span. Senior Michael Provenzano (Stratham, N.H.) recorded the first shot on goal for either side, but that was saved comfortably by Panthers goalkeeper Santiago Arango.
  • A few minutes later, fifth-year Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) stole the ball from an Adelphi defender at the midfield stripe. The speedy forward dribbled in on a breakaway chance with only Arango between him and the goal, but Verow's shot was denied as the game remained scoreless.
  • The momentum started to shift in favor of Adelphi after that, with the Panthers rattling off five consecutive shots on goal over the next eight minutes. Victor Castel fired two of those attempts on target for the Panthers, but Saint Anselm junior goalkeeper David Hood (Manchester, N.H.) stood his ground and was able to make the stops.
  • In the 20th minute, Adelphi got the ball to Rory Duggan on the right wing. His shot forced Hood to make a diving save to his right, but the rebound squirted out to Gonzalo Gil, who finished into a wide open net to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Hawks responded in the 27th minute with a goal of their own to even the score at 1-1. Hood launched a long ball from the other side of midfield that went over the Panthers back line. Leader was able to track it down and split two defenders with a touch into the penalty box. Arango charged out to make the save, but Leader chipped it over him and into the back of the net.
  • The celebrations did not last long as Adelphi regained the lead just 32 seconds later. A giveaway in the midfield led to a Panthers counter attack, which resulted in Gil finding Castel alone on the back side. Castel's finish into the top left corner made it a 2-1 game.
  • Less than three minutes after that, the visitors made 3-1 with a score by Richard DeBrosse, who tapped in a loose ball at the top of the six-yard box.
  • Neither side was able to generate any quality scoring chances after that as the first half ended with a 3-1 score.
  • The Panthers picked up where they left off early in the second half with four more shot attempts and two corners in the first few minutes.
  • Verow got another scoring chance for the Hawks in the 63rd minute. He received a pass at the top of the box and one-timed a shot towards goal, but Arango collected it with a two-handed grab.
  • Hood was required to make five more saves over the final 15 minutes of action, which helped keep his team down by just two.
  • Senior Lucas Bravo Ollé (Sitges, Barcelona, Spain) got a quality look for Saint Anselm in the 84th minute after a beautiful build up by the Hawks, but Arango was good for another stop on the low-bounding shot.
  • The Panthers saw out the remaining time and earned the 3-1 victory in poor weather conditions.
