HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mercy opened the scoring early with a goal in just the second minute. The Mavericks pressed the Hawks back line and forced a turnover, which led to a through ball down the left side for Hailey Metzger. Her shot floated up and over the Hawks goalkeeper and into the right side netting, making it 1-0 after just 1:47 had gone off the clock.
  • Saint Anselm answered right away with four shot attempts over the next 25 minutes of action. Sophomore Camryn Doyle (Norton, Mass.) fired two of those shots, one of which was on goal, but had her attempt denied by Mercy goalkeeper Anneliese Becker.
  • In the 30th minute, Pinto tested Becker with the second shot on goal for the Hawks following a corner kick. Becker was once again up to the task, stopping Pinto's attempt that was headed towards the lower right corner.
  • After both sides exchanged corner kicks in the final portion of the first half, junior Madison DiNapoli (North Reading, Mass.) had a couple of chances of her own, but her two shots on goal were both saved by Becker as the half ended, 1-0, in favor of the home team.
  • The Hawks outshot the Mavericks, 7-1, at the halftime break with the lone Mavericks shot finding the back of the net.
  • Saint Anselm created the first scoring opportunity just 15 seconds into the second half. The Hawks worked their way up the field with Pinto slipping a through ball ahead to fifth-year Tara McCleary (Quincy, Mass.), but her shot was corralled by a diving Becker.
  • Senior Erin Rutherford (Ashburnham, Mass.) and junior Nina Muir (Southington, Conn.) each rattled off shots on target in the 62nd minute, but Becker and the Mavericks continued to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
  • Saint Anselm freshman goalkeeper Samantha Swidorski (Woodbury, Minn.) made her first saves of the afternoon in the 64th minute, denying shots from Metzger and Skylar Schwenkler of Mercy.
  • The Hawks finally broke through in the 81st minute. Senior Riley DiGilio (Danvers, Mass.) got down the right wing and served in a cross that deflected and made its way to Pinto, who launched a shot into the left side of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
  • Both sides earned quality scoring looks in the closing minutes, but the game ended in a draw.
