Location: Waltham, Mass. (Bentley Football Stadium)
Date: Tuesday, September 17, 2024

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm came out on the front foot with a ton of possession in the attacking third. That resulted in the first shot attempt of the game from Hawks senior Andrew Kubinski (Norton, Mass.), but his shot missed high.
  • There was no question of the physicality of the game, with three yellow cards being issued and six more fouls being called in the first 25 minutes.
  • In the 25th minute, Bentley won a battle for a loose ball in the middle of the pitch. The ball made its way forward to Falcons forward Chad Meyers, who attacked the Hawks net at speed and finished into the lower left corner to make it 1-0.
  • Later in the half, Saint Anselm got back to work on the offensive end, finding fifth-year Zach Verow (Bedford, N.H.) on the right wing. Verow dribbled towards the end line and fired in a low serve, but the ball squirted passed several players in front of goal before being cleared away.
  • A pair of Hawks freshmen, Chance Prouty (Danvers, Mass.) and Noah Silva (Wolfeboro, N.H.) fired shots from distance in the final 10 minutes of the half, but both were off target as the Falcons maintained their 1-0 advantage at the break.
  • Just three minutes into the second half, Saint Anselm earned a set piece just outside the box. Prouty curled in a service that bounced up to senior Jack O'Brien (Norton, Mass.), but his shot was stopped by Bentley goalkeeper Cam Hall at close range.
  • The action started to increase at both ends with Hawks senior Caden Leader (Durham, N.H.) and Falcons forward Johann Fraser exchanging shot attempts.
  • Saint Anselm junior goalkeeper David Hood (Manchester, N.H.) made his first pair of saves after the 75th minute. Hood denied two shots from Bentley's Antonio Santos to keep his team within striking distance.
  • With under a minute left in the game, the Hawks earned a corner kick and sent everyone forward. The ball was crossed into the box to Hood, who had made his way all the way up the field, but his bouncing header was parried away by a diving Hall.
  • On the ensuing Hawks corner with under 30 seconds remaining, sophomore Jackson Dresens (Wayland, Mass.) connected with a header, but missed the frame high as the Falcons held on for the 1-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm held a slight 10-9 advantage in total shot attempts. Shots on goal were all tied up at three apiece. The Hawks also hit the cross bar once in the game.
  • Bentley had five corner kicks in the match, while Saint Anselm had four. The Hawks committed 10 fouls and received four yellow cards, while the Falcons were called for eight fouls and picked up three cautions.
  • Chad Meyers scored the lone goal for Bentley in the 25th minute. O'Brien led the Hawks with two shots on goal.
  • Hood made two saves and allowed the lone goal in the loss, while Hall made three stops in the shutout win.
  • This marked the 57th all-time meeting between these two teams. Saint Anselm falls to 22-29-6 against Bentley in the series. These teams meet again next week on Wednesday, September 25th at 3:00 p.m. for a Northeast-10 (NE10) Conference matchup back in Waltham, Mass.
