HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Franklin Pierce got out to a fast start, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, one batter singled and the next two walked to load the bases. The Ravens scored after having one batter get hit by a pitch, and Kiobel Lugo then stole home. After that, Franklin Pierce knocked home three more on a pair of singles to go ahead, 5-0.
  • Saint Anselm looked to respond in the bottom of the first after putting two runners on thanks to a couple of walks, but they stranded the runners on base as Franklin Pierce got out of the inning unscathed.
  • The Ravens tacked on three more runs in the top of the second. With two runners aboard, Joey Acker smashed a three-run home run to make it 8-0.
  • The Hawks answered with a couple of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Two batters walked and another was hit by pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Junior Jax Budgell (Newburyport, Mass.) then walked to score the first Saint Anselm run and senior Zack Clough brought home another with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-2.
  • In the bottom of the third, Junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) launched a solo shot, his second home run in as many days, to cut the deficit down to five runs.
  • Saint Anselm made things even closer in the bottom of the fifth inning with two more runs to pull within three. With runners on second and third and nobody out, freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) grounded out which scored a run and Scolaro then singled to left, bringing home another to make it 8-5, Franklin Pierce.
  • After that, both bullpens shut down the opposing offenses as no runs were scored for the remainder of the game. In the bottom of the ninth and down by three, the Hawks put two runners on, but the game ended with a groundout to second.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm finished with five runs on seven hits and committed no errors. Franklin Pierce recorded eight runs, all within the first two innings, on 12 hits and committed two errors. The Hawks left seven men on base, while the Ravens stranded 10 runners.
