Baseball Bested by Franklin Pierce in Conference Twinbill

RINDGE, N.H. –  The Saint Anselm College baseball team was bested by Franklin Pierce University during a Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks are now 3-6 in league play while the Ravens improved to a 7-2 conference record.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • The Ravens jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning featuring an RBI double from Kiobel Lugo. Senior Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.), making his fourth start on the mound for the Hawks, struck out three Ravens over the next two innings and allowed just one hit to keep the score at 2-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Saint Anselm's bats came alive as freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) began the inning with a single to right field. After Bourdeau made his way to third base thanks to two passed balls, senior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) picked up an RBI single up the middle to score Bourdeau and cut Franklin Pierce's lead in half.
  • The Ravens answered in the top of the seventh inning thanks to Connor Smalley and Eli Battipaglia, who each homered to put Franklin Pierce up by two runs. In the final two innings of game one, Franklin Pierce tallied three hits, but stranded four runners heading into the bottom of the ninth.
  • Sophomore Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) got on base after being hit by a pitch followed by Dow walking to put two runners on base in the final inning. Both Rose and Dow advanced into scoring position on a passed ball, but Franklin Pierce held on to secure game one win by a final score of 4-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1): 
  • Franklin Pierce scored four runs on seven hits with zero errors while Saint Anselm posted one run on three hits with two errors in the game.
  • The Ravens recorded three extra-base hits featuring a double and two home runs along with four stolen bases.  
  • Dow produced the lone RBI in the contest for Saint Anselm after going 1-for-2 at the plate including two walks. Sophomore Brenden Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) and Bourdeau also posted one hit apiece in the game for the Hawks.
  • Michel picked up the loss after throwing six innings, allowing just one earned run on two hits along with six punchouts. Junior Jared Reminder (Warwick, Mass.) pitched for two innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Senior Roman Ercoli (Concord, Mass.) threw the final inning for the Hawks, allowing just one hit and two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • Senior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) opened game two with a single to center field for the Hawks for his first hit of the evening. Clough stole second base to get into scoring position, but the Hawks stranded the runner heading into the second inning still scoreless.  
  • Franklin Pierce tacked on the first run of the game thanks to a home run by Nolan DeAndrade to give the Ravens the early 1-0 edge. In the top of the fourth, the Ravens added three runs on two hits to take a 4-0 lead highlighted by a three-RBI double from Lugo.
  • Bourdeau singled to center field to start the bottom of the fourth inning for Saint Anselm. Freshman Declan Ryan (Hooksett, N.H.) then followed with an infield single to the third baseman who committed a throwing error, resulting in Bourdeau tagging home to put the Hawks on the scoreboard.
  • After Franklin Pierce added another run in the fifth, Saint Anselm quickly responded in the bottom of the inning by scoring two runs to make it a 5-3 game. Senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) doubled to left-center, putting two Hawks in scoring position before sophomore Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) walked to load the bases. After Bourdeau picked up an RBI by walking to score Clough, Elmore tagged home on a wild pitch to narrow Franklin Pierce's lead to two runs.
  • The Ravens cashed in a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull away with a 7-3 advantage. With the bases loaded, DeAndrade singled to left field to score two runs for Franklin Pierce and take a four-run lead.
  • Junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) blasted the ball over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-4 with his second home run of the season. The Ravens, however, sealed the game two victory after scoring two more runs in the last three innings to win by a final score of 9-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2): 
  • Franklin Pierce and Saint Anselm each produced seven hits while the Ravens made one error and the Hawks recorded zero in the contest.
  • The Ravens posted three doubles and a home run along with three stolen bases. The Hawks recorded two extra-base hits with a double and a home run while also stealing three bases in the game highlighted by Clough with two stolen bases.
  • Clough ended the game going 2-for-5 at the plate with one run scored. Scolaro went 1-for-4 with a home run and one run scored while Elmore also had a 1-for-4 performance with one run scored and a double.  
  • Vaughan earned the loss for Saint Anselm after pitching the first four innings allowing five runs on five hits. He matched his season-high with eight strikeouts after facing 25 batters.
