Baseball Falls to Southern N.H. on the Road, 9-4

HOOKSETT, N.H. –  The Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to crosstown rival Southern New Hampshire University, 9-4, on the road during Northeast-10 Conference action. The Hawks drop to 4-12 in conference play while the Penmen improve to a 12-4 league record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) produced the opening hit of the game with a single to right field for the Hawks. Freshman Quinn MacDonald (Kennebunkport, Maine) made his seventh appearance on the mound for Saint Anselm and struck out his first batter of the day to retire the side and keep the score level at 0-0.
  • Both teams struggled at the plate for the following three innings with freshman Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) picking up the only hit off a single to right-center. In the bottom of the fifth, the Penmen bats came alive as Dyrenson Wouters opened the inning with a solo home run to give the hosts the 1-0 edge.
  • Southern N.H. continued to pile it on in the fifth, recording six more hits and scoring another five runs highlighted by a two-run homer from Joel Valera to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
  • After the Penmen tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-0, the Hawks answered in the top of the seventh scoring four runs off three hits.
  • Gonzalez picked up an RBI single to score sophomore Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) for the first Hawks run of the game. Freshman Brayden Michaelson (Charlton, Mass.) then stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and flied out to right-center field, enough for junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) to tag and score.
  • After that, senior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) scored both Michaelson and Gonzalez with a two-RBI single, cutting down the Penmen's lead to just three runs.
  • Southern N.H. extended their advantage to five runs after posting two runs off two hits in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 9-4 game. Freshman Declan Ryan (Hooksett, N.H.) notched the only hit in the final two innings for Saint Anselm as Southern N.H. sealed the victory by a final score of 9-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Southern N.H. produced nine runs off nine hits along with one error while Saint Anselm scored four runs on seven hits with an error as well. Both teams left eight runners on base.
  • The Penmen ended the game with four extra-base hits featuring two home runs and a pair of doubles. The home team also posted eight stolen bases in the game in comparison to the Hawks with one stolen base.
  • Dow went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI, while Gonzalez also got two hits after four plate appearances with one RBI.
  • MacDonald picked up his second loss of the season after throwing the opening four innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and striking out two batters. Fifth-year John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) pitched two innings, giving up one run off one hit along with five punchouts.
  • Sophomore Andrew MacDonald (Amesbury, Mass.) made a brief appearance on the rubber for the Hawks, facing six batters and allowing two earned runs off two hits. Freshman Andrew Chenevert (Dracut, Mass.) closed out the game for the Hawks pitching 1.1 innings with no runs nor hits given up.
  • Saint Anselm is now 34-67 in the all-time series against Southern N.H. after today's 9-4 road loss to the Penmen.
