HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • American International struck first in the top of the first inning, putting two runners on with two outs. Tyler Ziemak drove both home with a two-run double to left field to make it 2-0, Yellow Jackets.
  • Starting pitcher Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) responded nicely in the top of the second for Saint Anselm, retiring the side after allowing a pair of singles. Reminder also got through the third inning without allowing a run after a leadoff base-hit to keep his team down by just two runs.
  • After the Hawks went down in order in the bottom of the third, Kiernan Caffrey hit an RBI single up the middle to help the Yellow Jackets put another run up in the top of the fourth, making it a 3-0 game.
  • American International got three more runs across the very next inning to double their advantage. An RBI single by Ziemak along with a couple of throwing errors by Saint Anselm help the visitors extend their lead to 6-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks put runners on the corners with two outs, but stranded both after a groundout ended the inning.
  • Saint Anselm finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) got to first base after getting hit by a pitch to start the inning. Ryan then stepped up to the plate with two outs and ripped a two-run home run, the first of his career, out to left-center field to make it 7-2.
  • The Yellow Jackets offense erupted in the top of the seventh for six more runs to blow the game wide open. Josh Frometa drove in a pair with an RBI single down the left field line and two more scored after a single up the middle by Jackson Haker followed by a fielding error in center field.
  • A sacrifice fly scored the 12th run for American International, and Ziemak put an exclamation point on the inning with a solo home run to left-center.
  • Elmore recorded an RBI with a base-hit to right-center field in the bottom of the seventh, scoring freshman Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) who led off the inning with a double.
  • Four more runs by the Yellow Jackets in the top half of the ninth all but secured their win in game one. Shea Cuccinotta singled to right-center which brought home a run and Owen Clancy drove another in on an RBI groundout. Ryan Lavelle then launched a two-run home run over the left field fence to make it 17-3, American International.
  • Saint Anselm put runners on the corners with two down in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the first game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1):
  • American International's 17 runs came on 18 hits. The Yellow Jackets left 11 runners on base and committed one error in the dominant game one win. Saint Anselm scored three runs on seven hits and committed four errors while leaving 10 runners aboard.
  • The Yellow Jackets finished with four extra base hits and two homers, while the Hawks had a couple of extra base hits with a double and a home run. Both teams stole four bases.
  • Seven different batters recorded one hit for Saint Anselm. Ryan had two RBIs and went 1-for-4 at the plate after recording his first collegiate homer, while Elmore went 1-for-3 and had one RBI and one run scored.
  • On the mound, Reminder lasted five full innings, allowing nine hits and two earned runs while striking out four and walking two on 87 pitches. Senior Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) came on in relief for the Hawks and went 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out one and walking four.
  • Freshman Caden Smith (Lowell, Mass.) recorded two outs after that, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. Senior Griffin Tomaszycki (Taunton, Mass.) threw the final two innings and surrendered four earned runs on three hits while fanning a pair.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • After scoring just three runs in the entire first game of the doubleheader, Saint Anselm's bats came alive early in game two as the Hawks scored seven runs across the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Brune drew a leadoff walk and senior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) singled up the middle. With one out, Bourdeau smashed a three-run homer to straight away center to give the Hawks an early 3-0 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the second, Saint Anselm put runners on first and second to start the inning. The next batter was Brune, who singled to left-center that scored a run to make it 4-0. Dow then singled to load the bases and next up was Elmore, who was hit by a pitch which allowed another run to score.
  • Another run came home after Bourdeau grounded into a double play and sophomore Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) singled up the middle which scored Dow and allowed the Hawks to extend their lead to 7-0.
  • Saint Anselm's starting pitcher Will Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) tossed an efficient opening two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a pair while keeping American International off the scoreboard.
  • However, the Yellow Jackets got two runs back in the top of the third. Two straight batters singled and the next was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. After Hunter fanned Chad Lavelle for the first out of the inning, Ziemak sacrificed with a flyout in foul territory that scored the first run of the game for American International. A second run scored on a wild pitch, but Hunter got out of the jam with another strikeout.
  • The visitors made things interesting in the top of the fourth by scoring three more runs to pull within two. Two straight batters were hit by pitches to start the inning and another got on base with a bunt single to once again load the bases.
  • Hunter was then replaced on the mound by freshman Cooper Hagen (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and the very next batter was hit by a pitch which scored a run to make it a 7-3 game.
  • After Hagen picked up two huge outs by striking out consecutive batters, an infield single by Chad Lavelle scored the fourth run for American International. With the bases still loaded, Ziemak walked and another runner touched home plate to make it 7-5. Hagen got out of trouble by forcing Yeudy Ramirez to fly out to right field to end the inning.
  • With the same score in the top of the sixth inning, American International looked to be threatening once again after putting two runners on with nobody out. Those runners advanced to second and third after a flyout to center field, but Dow then made a dandy of a play at first base, diving to his right to catch a line drive and tossing it over to second to get the baserunner who was late to get back for the double play.
  • Junior closer Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) entered the game for the Hawks with a save situation in the top of the seventh. Gibbons struck out the first batter, but walked the second. A groundout was enough for the second out of the inning, but the Yellow Jackets put runners on the corners with two down after a fielding error. Gibbons eventually fanned Ryan Lavelle for the final out of the game to give Saint Anselm the victory in the shortened second game of the twinbill.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2):
  • Saint Anselm recorded seven runs on 10 hits and left six runners on base. American International finished with five runs on seven hits and left 10 runners on base. Both teams had one error in the game.
  • The Hawks had just one extra base hit on the home run by Bourdeau, while the Yellow Jackets did not have any. Both teams recorded one stolen base.
  • Four different Hawks in Bourdeau, Brune, Dow, and freshman Brendan Gonzalez (Mechanicville, N.Y.) ended with two-hit games for Saint Anselm. Bourdeau had a team-best three RBIs courtesy of his second home run of the season, while Brune, Elmore, and Howrigan had an RBI apiece.
  • Hunter pitched three full innings and allowed five earned runs on four hits while striking out four batters on 63 pitches. Hagen came on in relief and recorded his first career win after lasting three innings and striking out three while allowing just one hit and no earned runs. Gibbons earned his fourth save of the campaign by tossing the final inning and striking out a pair on 18 pitches.
  • These two programs have now played 88 games in the all-time series. Saint Anselm currently holds a 39-48-1 overall record against American International since 1983.
