HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the first inning, senior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) singled up the middle to lead things off for Saint Anselm. Clough then stole second and with two outs, senior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) drove him home with an RBI single to center to put the Hawks in front, 1-0.
- Saint Michael's plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. After a double by Evan Balian put runners on second and third, Max Kolifrath drove a two-run double to center to make it 2-1. Colin Kinsella then singled to left, which scored Kolifrath to give the Purple Knights a two-run advantage.
- Saint Anselm's starting pitcher, senior Will Hunter (Middletonm Mass.), responded well in the second inning by striking out three consecutive Saint Michael's batters.
- In the bottom of the third, the Purple Knights tacked on three more runs. Balian walked and Kolifrath was hit by a pitch. Those two runners were pushed over to second and third after a groundout, and Kinsella drove them both home with a base-hit to center. Kinsella advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored after a double by Dom Tetta, extending the Saint Michael's lead to 6-1.
- In the top of the fourth, senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) smoked a double down the left field line. However, the next three Hawks batters were retired to end the inning.
- Junior Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) relieved Hunter for the Hawks to begin the bottom of the fourth and got three quick outs including a double play.
- After the Hawks went one-two-three at the plate in the top of the fifth, Kolifrath doubled for the Purple Knights and moved over to third base on a wild pitch. Kinsella then drove a sacrifice fly out to right field to make it a 7-1 game.
- Saint Anselm answered by getting the bats going in the sixth. Clough and freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) started the inning with back to back singles and Elmore then got aboard after a fielding error committed by Saint Michael's, which loaded the bases with nobody out. Dow then grounded into what looked to be a double play, but another error by the Purple Knights allowed two runs to score as the Hawks cut the lead to 7-3.
- The Hawks scored again in the top of the seventh to make it just a three-run game. Sophomore Brendan Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) led off with a double to right center field and then scored after sophomore Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) singled.
- The Purple Knights responded in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring twice more to increase their advantage to 9-4. Kinsella recorded his fifth RBI of the game by singling to center. With the bases loaded, Saint Michael's added one more run on a wild pitch to pull back ahead by five runs.
- In the final two innings, Saint Anselm put just one runner on base and could not cut into the lead, resulting in a 9-4 final score.
