Three Hawks Homer as Baseball Splits Results Against Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.The Saint Anselm College baseball team split results against Slippery Rock University during a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. The Hawks are now 6-9 on the season while Slippery Rock improved to a 7-3 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1):
  • Slippery Rock took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Joey Purcell singled to left center to score two runs. Senior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill. Mass.) struck out his third batter of the day to end the bottom of the third and keep Slippery Rock off the scoreboard heading into the fourth.
  • In the top of the third, senior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) singled to right field to load the bases up for Saint Anselm, but Gage Gillott produced a punchout for The Rock to hold off the Hawks offense.
  • The hosts tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a 2 RBI home run by Kitko to put Slippery Rock ahead 4-0. Sophomore Andrew MacDonald (Amesbury, Mass.) checked into the game for Saint Anselm and secured the final out of the inning to head into the top of the sixth.
  • The Hawks were unable to register a hit in the final two innings of the game as Slippery Rock added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to an RBI single from Purcell to take game one by a final score of 5-0.  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Slippery Rock posted five runs off eight hits in the game while Saint Anselm produced four hits. Both teams also recorded one error in game one of the day.
  • Freshman Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) went 1-for-3 at the plate along with a stolden base for the Hawks.
  • Kitko led The Rock going 2-for-3 with a two RBI home run and one run while Purcell also went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
  • Vaughan picked up the loss after pitching for 4.2 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits and striking out three batters. MacDonald threw for 1.1 innings giving up one earned run on two hits after facing six batters.
  • Gillott earned the win for Slippery Rock giving up zero runs and allowing four hits after pitching all seven innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2):
  • Senior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) opened game two with a single to right field for the Hawks in the top of the first before stranding two runners in scoring position. The Rock jumped out to 2-0 lead highlighted by an RBI double from Gillott to put Slippery Rock up early in the game.
  • The following inning, freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) lasered the ball into right field to score freshman Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) and junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) tying the game up at 2-2.  Senior Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.), making his fifth start on the mound, struck out the third Slippery Rock batter to keep The Rock off the scoreboard in the second inning.
  • Sophomore Brenden Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) blasted a home run into left field to regain a two-run advantage. A couple innings later, Slippery Rock narrowed the Hawks lead to one run with an RBI single from Purcell to make it a 4-3 game.
  • The Hawks responded in the top of the fifth as Harris earned another RBI with a sacfrice fly to tag Clough home extending their lead back to two runs. In the bottom of the fifth, The Rock score one run off two hits highlighted by an RBI double from Morris to once again cut Saint Anselm's lead to one run.
  • Saint Anselm's bats came alive in the top of the sixth as junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) kicked off the inning with a home run to left center. Shortly after, Howrigan blasted the ball over the fence for the second home run of the inning to put Saint Anselm ahead 7-4. Slippery Rock answered in the bottom of the sixth inning as Koby Bubash hit a three-run home run to even the score up at 7-7.
  • Harris tacked on another RBI in the seventh inning to score senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, Mass.). Howrigan then added two more runs with a two-RBI double to left field to put the Hawks up 10-7. After Slippery Rock tacked on one score in the bottom of the seventh, Saint Anselm kept their offense going in the eighth tallying three runs off three hits to take a 13-8 advantage.
  • In the final inning of the game, Slippery Rock was able to tack on one late run as Brett Galcik scored on a wild pitch, but Saint Anselm ultimately cemented their 13-9 win to take game two against The Rock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm held a slight 14-13 edge in total hits while both teams produced one error in the game.
  • Howrigan ended the game going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and his first collegiate home run as a Hawk. Harris also recorded his first collegiate home run in the win after going 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs while Scolaro tallied his first homer of the season, the sixth in his career.
  • Bubash recorded the only home run in the game for Slippery Rock going 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and two runs.
  • Michel pithced the opening four innings for the Hawks allowing three earned runs on five hits along with six strikeouts. Freshman Andrew Chenevert (Dracut, Mass.) threw for 1.2 innings giving up three earned runs on three hits.
  • Freshman Matt Bianculli (Walpole, Mass.) picked up his first collegiate win on the mound for Saint Anselm after checking into the sixth inning and allowing just two earned runs on three hits. Junior Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) and freshman Quinn MacDonald (Kennebunkport, Maine) wrapped game two for the Hawks each pitching one inning. Gibbons allowed zero runs and just one hit while MacDonald gave up one earned run on one hit along with one punchout.
