Elmore Blasts Three-Run Homer, Baseball Sweeps Dominican in Sunday Doubleheader

CARY, N.C. – Senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) drove in four runs in total, including a game-tying three-run home run in the second game, to power the Saint Anselm College baseball team to a pair of comeback victories in Sunday's doubleheader against Dominican University (N.Y.).

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • After a scoreless first inning, Dominican scored first in the top of the second. The Chargers put runners on second and third to start the inning and Jean Nunez brought a runner home after grounding out to second, helping Dominican go ahead, 1-0.
  • Saint Anselm wasted no time and tied up the score in the bottom of the second. Freshman Austin Brune (Billerica, Mass.) led off with a triple to right-center field and junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) brought him home on a single to left to make it 1-1.
  • The Hawks added two more runs and took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. With two outs in the inning, seniors Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) and Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) each singled to put two runners on base. The next batters were Elmore and Brune, who each recorded an RBI single to help Saint Anselm take a two-run lead.
  • On the mound for Saint Anselm was senior Mathew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.). After giving up a run in the first, Michel was lights out until he was removed after the sixth inning. The senior allowed just one hit over his final three innings of action and recorded three strikeouts.
  • With a 3-1 lead going into the seventh and final inning, the Hawks called on junior Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) to close things out. Gibbons allowed one runner aboard after a walk, but effortlessly finished out the game with a strikeout and two groundouts to earn the save.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):
  • Saint Anselm scored three runs and had 10 hits in the game, while Dominican totaled just one run on five hits. The Hawks had one error and left five runners on base, while the Chargers stranded six on the base paths.
  • Brune, Elmore, and Scolaro each had an RBI in the win. Freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.), Brune, Clough, and Scolaro all had two-hit performances for the Hawks.
  • Michel went six innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits on the way to his first win of the season for Saint Anselm. Gibbons collected his second save of the year after striking out one in the final inning.

GAME 2
Score: Saint Anselm 4, Dominican 3 (7 innings)
Win: M. Bianculli (1-0)  Loss: J. Stolike (0-3)  Save: J. Donovan (1)
Records: Saint Anselm 5-7; Dominican 3-9

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Saint Anselm had two runners on with two outs after a pair of walks in the top of the first, but Brune lined out to second and ended the inning.
  • Dominican put three runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning to take the early lead. With runners on second and third and one out, Joseph Torre singled to right that scored one. The second Charger run scored on a throwing error, and Jean Nunez brought home the third on an RBI single through the left side to make it 3-0, Dominican.
  • After squandering three in the first inning, Hawks senior pitcher Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) bounced back in the second. With one man on following a leadoff walk, Reminder forced the Chargers to ground into a double play followed by another groundout to end the inning.
  • Saint Anselm got the bats going in the top of the third and tied the score. Bourdeau and Dow led off the inning with a single apiece. Clough then lined out to second for the first out of the inning, but Elmore stepped into the batter's box and blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence to make it a 3-3 game.
  • In the bottom of the third, Ty Gilligan led off with a single for Dominican, but was caught stealing second on the throw by Saint Anselm's sophomore catcher Stephen Betty (Lowell, Mass.).
  • Freshman pitcher Matt Bianculli (Walpole, Mass.) replaced Reminder to start the fourth and tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless ball. The first-year allowed just two hits and struck out three in just his third collegiate appearance.
  • Bourdeau doubled in the fourth and sixth innings, and Clough also doubled in the fifth, but Saint Anselm did not get the go-ahead runner across the plate as the game remained tied heading into the seventh and final inning.
  • Elmore got on with a single in the top half of the seventh. With two outs and Elmore on the move, freshman Declan Ryan (Hookset, N.H.) hit a high drive out to deep right field. The Chargers right fielder committed an error allowing Elmore to come all the way around from first to give the Hawks a 4-3 lead. Ryan advanced to second base on the play.
  • After Bianculli punched out the first batter in the bottom of the seventh, fifth-year John Donovan (Lowell, Mass.) came on to get the final two outs for Saint Anselm. Two runners got on for Dominican after a fielding error and then a single, but Donovan got out of the jam after Torre grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2):
  • Both teams recorded eight hits in the game. Saint Anselm had two errors and left nine runners on base, while Dominican had one error and left seven aboard.
  • Bourdeau and Elmore led the Hawks with productive games at the plate. Bourdeau went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and scored a run, while Elmore went 2-2 with a home run, three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. For Elmore, it was his team-leading third homer of the season. Freshman Brayden Michaelson (Charlton, Mass.) recorded his first career hit in the win for Saint Anselm.
  • Reminder tossed three innings and allowed three runs, one of which was earned, while giving up five hits. Bianculli went 3.1 innings and did not allow a single run in his first career win. The freshman surrendered two hits and punched out three. Donovan got the final two outs for Saint Anselm to earn the save after giving up one hit.
  • These two games were the 10th and 11th meetings between these two programs all-time. Saint Anselm improves to 10-1 overall against Dominican and has won the last 10 games against the Chargers.
