Forbes Drops 22 Points, Women's Basketball Clipped at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Sophomore Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) poured in a game-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, but the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team suffered a narrow road defeat to Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Fifth-year Liv Robles (Wallingford, Conn.) got Saint Anselm on the board with her first three of the game just over two minutes in. Forbes contributed the second basket for the Hawks a minute later and a layup by junior Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) helped the visitors obtain a 7-5 lead.
  • Franklin Pierce answered quickly with a 9-2 scoring run to take a 14-9 lead, but senior Alexa Quirolo (New Rochelle, N.Y.) then cashed in on a triple for Saint Anselm with seven seconds left in the quarter and the Hawks trailed by four points going into the second.
  • Despite Forbes scoring the first eight points in the second quarter for Saint Anselm, the Hawks were held scoreless for the final 4:40 of the period. As a result, the Ravens doubled up the Hawks with 16 points in the second and held a 32-20 lead at halftime. Leana Heitmann scored 12 points in the second including a four-point play with 33 seconds remaining in the half.
  • A high-scoring third quarter once again favored Franklin Pierce. Saint Anselm attempted to get back into the game with a strong end to the third, but every basket was answered by the home team. The Ravens led by as many as 17 in the quarter and held a 56-41 advantage going into the fourth.
  • The Hawks showed life to begin the fourth with two quick Robles threes in the first minute to cut the deficit to 11 points. Two field goals in the paint by Quirolo followed by a Forbes midrange jumper made it just a seven-point game with the Ravens leading, 62-55, and 4:35 on the clock.
  • However, Saint Anselm did not score a field goal for the next four minutes of action. Franklin Pierce sealed the game with some late free throws and held on for the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • It was a tough shooting night with both teams in the thirties for field goal percentage. Saint Anselm made 21 of their 58 attempts (36.2%), while Franklin Pierce made 22 of their 58 shots (37.9%). The Hawks made six out of 15 (40.0%) from deep, while the Ravens made five out of 16 (31.3%) on three point attempts.
  • Franklin Pierce had an excellent night at the foul line by making 21 of 24 free throws (87.5%). Saint Anselm went 10-15 (66.7%) at the stripe.
  • The Ravens held the edge on the glass, out-rebounding the Hawks, 40-27. Franklin Pierce committed 16 turnovers in the ball game compared to 12 committed by Saint Anselm.
  • Franklin Pierce held an advantage in steals, 9-6, but Saint Anselm led in blocked shots, 7-6. Points in the paint was all tied up, 28-28, and so too was fastbreak points, 11-11. the Hawks' bench outscored the Ravens', 15-9.
  • Forbes led Saint Anselm with a game-high 22 points (7-14 FG, 1-3 3FG, 7-11 FT) and a grabbed game-high 10 rebounds. Robles added 17 points (6-12 FG, 3-6 3FG, 2-3 FT), hauled in nine rebounds, and blocked two shots. Quirolo contributed 12 points on 83% shooting off the bench.
  • Heitmann led Franklin Pierce with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds.
  • This marked the 66th all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm is now 39-27 overall against Franklin Pierce.
