HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Gina Gaccione (Rutherford, N.J.) got Saint Anselm on the board early in the first quarter with a layup off a feed from Robles. Getting her first points of the game a couple minutes later was Robles with a layup of her own.
  • However, the Hawks only scored one more field goal for the remainder of the quarter, but good effort at the defensive end held Southern Connecticut to just 12 points throughout the first 10 minutes.
  • Back-to-back layups to open the second quarter by junior Melanie Hoyt (Stamford, N.Y.) helped Saint Anselm trim the deficit to just two points with the score at 14-12.
  • After two minutes of scoreless basketball at both ends, the Owls started to create some separation with under five minutes to go in the half. 10 combined points from Southern Connecticut State's Rheyna Steinauer and Delaney Haines led the Owls on a 12-2 run to go into halftime with a 12-point lead.
  • Robles knocked down the first three of the game for Saint Anselm at the start of the second half, but Southern Connecticut State pushed their lead to as many as 21 points during the third quarter. The Hawks found a scoring source by getting to the free throw line, but trailed by 19 after three.
  • A 7-0 run in the first minute and a half of the fourth helped Saint Anselm generate some momentum. Robles drilled another triple while Hoyt and sophomore Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) each converted on midrange jumpers.
  • Forbes then scored six straight points for the Hawks, but the home team still trailed by 16 points with under five minutes to play. Robles scored the next five for Saint Anselm, but with two minutes left the game was out of reach and the Owls went on to win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Southern Connecticut State shot efficiently in the game, making 24 of 49 shots (49.0%). Saint Anselm had a tough game shooting the ball, only making 18 of 61 attempts (29.5%). The Owls only attempted seven threes, making three of them (42.9%). The Hawks made four out of 15 (26.7%) from long distance.
  • Southern Connecticut State also shot well at the foul line by going 14 for 15 (93.3%). Saint Anselm went eight for 12 (66.7%) at the stripe.
  • The Owls held a slight edge in points in the paint, 26-22,  but the difference in the game came in bench points with the Owls' reserves outscoring the Hawks', 30-10.
  • Despite the double-digit win, Southern Connecticut State turned the ball over 20 times compared to just eight Saint Anselm turnovers.
  • Forbes and Robles both had 15 points and shot 6-16 from the field for the Hawks. Robles also made three threes in the game.
  • Seven different players for the Owls had better than six points, with Hope Fox leading her team with 12 points.
  • This marked the 32nd game all-time between these two programs. Saint Anselm falls to 13-19 overall against Southern Connecticut State.
