Baseball Tripped Up in Myrtle Beach Finale

Location: Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Myrtle Beach High School)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Starting the game for Saint Anselm on the mound was senior Hunter Harris (Altamont, N.Y.). Harris allowed just one hit through the first three innings, helping the game remain scoreless.
  • Three straight singles for the Hawks opened the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Ryan stepped up to the plate and drove home the first two RBIs of his career that gave Saint Anselm the 2-0 lead. The next batter, junior Jax Budgell (Newburyport, Mass.), singled to right and a fielding error allowed two more Hawks runs to touch home.
  • Harris pitched flawlessly over the next two innings to keep Southern Connecticut State off the scoreboard, but after he was removed in the sixth, the Owls finally got on the board with an RBI single to make it 4-1.
  • The Owls eventually tied the score up in the seventh inning by scoring three times after a wild pitch and a throwing error committed by the Hawks.
  • Southern Connecticut State took their first lead and really opened things up in the bottom of the eighth inning. After recording two quick outs, the Owls rallied to load the bases. One run scored on a passed ball, and the next batter smashed a three-run home run to make it an 8-4 game.
  • The next two Owls batters ripped solo shots out to left field that made it 10-4, Southern Connecticut State. Saint Anselm failed to have a base runner reach in the ninth inning and fell by a six run deficit.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Both teams had 11 hits in the game, and each committed one error. The Owls hit three home runs in the contest while leaving four runners on base. The Hawks left six baserunners stranded.
  • Eight out of Saint Anselm's nine batters recorded at least one hit in the game, with Ryan, senior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.), and sophomore Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) recording two hits apiece. Ryan finished with the only two RBIs for the Hawks.
  • Harris pitched five and one third innings while giving up just one hit and one earned run. The senior walked one batter and struck out six, the most in any appearance of his with the Hawks.
