HAVERHILL, Mass. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team picked up two wins over Saint Michael's College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. Senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) powered a monster offensive performance for the Hawks in an 18-7 game one win with a home run, three hits, and five RBIs at the dish, while solid pitching and two RBIs apiece from senior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) and freshman Mavrick Bourdeau (Billerica, Mass.) was enough for a 5-2 victory in the second game. Saint Anselm improves to .500 with a 3-3 record on the season, while Saint Michael's falls to 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • A costly error by Saint Anselm with two outs in the top of the first inning allowed Saint Michael's to get runners on and score twice. That lead was short lived, as the Hawks responded with a three-run bottom of the first inning. Senior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.) drove one run home on a double to left and with two runners on a couple batters later, freshman Declan Ryan (Hooksett, N.H.) launched a triple to center that gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead.
  • Despite the offensive success, Saint Anselm had trouble in the field and committed another error in the top of the second, resulting in two more Saint Michael's runs and the Purple Knights took back the lead, 4-3.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Elmore stepped up to bat for the Hawks and smashed his first home run of the year, a solo shot to left, that tied the score up at four runs apiece.
  • The Saint Anselm offense then exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning four walks, five hits and nine runs. Bourdeau scored on a passed ball to make it 5-4, Hawks, and Dow drove home senior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) on a single to center that gave Saint Anselm a two-run advantage. After that, Elmore drove home both Clough and Dow which made it 8-4 and forced a pitching change by Saint Michael's.
  • Three batters later, after Ryan and junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) both walked to load the bases, freshman Shea Howrigan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) stepped into the batter's box and cleared the bases with a double to right field. The freshman then scored on an error and a sacrifice fly later in the inning by Clough made it 13-4, Hawks, after five.
  • With two outs in the top of the sixth, Saint Anselm committed yet another error in the field. The Purple Knights made the Hawks pay by getting three more runs across home plate to cut the deficit to six runs.
  • In the bottom half of the sixth, Scolaro recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly and Howrigan drove home Ryan on a single to left to help Saint Anselm increase their lead to eight.
  • A two-run double by Elmore followed by an RBI single by Ryan in the bottom of the seventh made it 18-7, Hawks. Junior pitcher Jared Reminder (Warwick, R.I.) tossed consecutive one-two-three innings in the seventh and eighth before freshman Cooper Hagen (Westborough, Mass.) closed things out with a scoreless ninth to give Saint Anselm its second win of the young season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):

  • Elmore had a huge game at the plate and went three-for-four with a home run, five RBIs, a walk, and four runs scored. Ryan went two-for-three at the dish with three RBIs (career-high), two walks, and two runs scored to go along with his first career triple. Howrigan also had a nice afternoon with the bat, recording his first-ever three-hit game in addition to the first four RBIs of his career. Dow went two-for-four with two RBIs and scored three times.
  • Reminder earned the win on the mound after hurling four innings and allowing just one earned run. The junior allowed four hits and struck out four. HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Saint Anselm's offense struck first in the second game of the doubleheader. After Bourdeau got on base via error, Clough drove him home with a single to right field to put the Hawks ahead, 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the second, Sam Cavossa singled to get aboard, then stole second and made his way to third on a passed ball for Saint Michael's. Cavossa then scored to tie it up when Terence Moynihan grounded out to short.
  • The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Purple Knights took their first lead of the game. Evan Balian hit a lead off triple to right field and scored when the next batter, Cavossa, drove a sacrifice fly out to center.
  • Senior Will Hunter pitcher (Middleton, Mass.) came on in relief for Saint Anselm at the beginning of the fifth inning. Hunter pitched four innings without surrendering any hits or runs, allowing his team to have a chance to come from behind.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Hawks did just that and took a 3-2 lead. Bourdeau drove Howrigan home on a single to right to tie it and Clough scored a runner on an RBI groundout to give Saint Anselm the lead once again.
  • With two outs in the top of the eighth, Scolaro, Howrigan, and sophomore Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) all walked to load the bases. Bourdeau, the next batter, was hit by a pitch which scored a run to make it 4-2. In the ninth, Dowrigan sacrifice flied out to bring home Dow and make it a three-run game.
  • Hunter provided stability on the mound for Saint Anselm by pitching consecutive one-two-three innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. Junior pitcher Marko Gibbons (Delmar, N.Y.) toed the rubber in the ninth and retired the side to earn his first career save and seal the win for the Hawks.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2):

  • Bourdeau and Clough each recorded two RBIs in the game for the Hawks. Clough and Dow each finished with a pair of hits, while Ryan walked twice.
  • Senior Mathew Michael (Haverhill, Mass.) started on the mound for Saint Anselm and pitched four innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out three batters. Hunter excelled in his four innings of no-hit ball. The senior did not allow a single walk or run while striking out five. Gibbons fanned one batter in his efficient six-pitch ninth inning.
  • Saint Anselm has now won 14 of their last 15 games against Saint Michael's. The Hawks are 39-20 against the Purple Knights since 1990.
