Baseball Drops Season Opener in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Despite an 11-hit performance, including a three-hit afternoon from senior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.), the Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped its season opening game to Southern Connecticut State University by a final score of 6-4 on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm was held without a hit until Elmore doubled in the fourth inning. The Hawks were also held scoreless and trailed, 5-0, going into the sixth inning.
  • The bats came to life in the top of the sixth with Saint Anselm plating three runs to cut Southern Connecticut State's lead to just two runs. Senior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.), Elmore, and sophomore Brenden Harris (Altamont, N.Y.) all ripped RBI singles in consecutive plate appearances to make it a 5-3 game.
  • The Owls responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the same inning to extend their lead to three runs.
  • In the top of the eighth, Elmore led off with a double and advanced to third after Harris grounded out. With two outs, junior Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) stepped up to the plate and drove Elmore home with an RBI single to left that made it 6-4.
  • Saint Anselm kept Southern Connecticut scoreless in the eighth, but could not tie the score despite getting runners on second and third in the top of the ninth.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm ended the contest with four runs on 11 hits and made two errors. Southern Connecticut State ended with six runs on nine hits and had one error. The Hawks left 10 runners on base while the Owls left eight stranded.
  • Eight Saint Anselm batters recorded at least one hit in the game. Elmore registered just the second three-hit game of his career and had two doubles.
  • Elmore (twice), Clough, and senior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) each doubled. Clough, Elmore, Harris, and Scolaro, each had RBI singles in the loss.
  • Senior Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill, Mass.) started and threw five innings, giving up just two earned runs and striking out four. Freshman Matt Bianculli (Walpole, Mass.) came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings while striking out two.
