HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Arbuckle knocked down a pair of triples in the opening three minutes of action to help his team jump out to an early 10-6 lead.
  • Southern Connecticut State then outscored Saint Anselm 17-5 over the next five minutes and took an eight-point advantage. Midway through the first half, Marty Silvera scored consecutive buckets and the Owls led, 32-19.
  • Helping end the drought for Saint Anselm was junior Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) with his first three-pointer of the game. The Australian knocked down a pair at the line a couple possessions later to cut the deficit back down to eight points.
  • After another basket by Southern Connecticut State's Silvera with 5:33 remaining in the first, Saint Anselm's defense turned it up a notch, holding the Owls to just three points for the rest of the half.
  • The Hawks used that to their advantage and went on a 13-3 run of their own to tie the score by halftime. Junior Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland) scored five points for Saint Anselm during that stretch including an and-one in transition with under a second to go.
  • The first basket of the second half for the Hawks was a triple drained by senior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.). Arbuckle then scored four points in a row for Saint Anselm, but a made layup by Kazell Stewart pushed Southern Connecticut State's lead back up to 10 points five minutes into the second half.
  • A good three-pointer from Silvera a couple minutes later made it 61-44, Owls, and capped off the visitors' 24-7 scoring surge. The Hawks answered with nine straight points of their own to cut the deficit back down to eight points. Arbuckle and junior Keith Robinson (Phillip Island, Australia) combined to score all nine during that sequence.
  • Saint Anselm got into the bonus situation fairly early and knocked down a bunch of free throws as a result. The Hawks made it just a six-point lead for the Owls with the score at 66-60 and seven minutes left in the game.
  • With under five minutes to play, Saint Anselm's defense gave them a chance by keeping Southern Connecticut State off the scoreboard, but the Hawks could not convert on three straight trips at the offensive end. The Owls extended their lead back into double-digits, made some clutch free throws, and held on to win by 10 points.
