Men's Basketball Suffers Loss to Daemen at East Region Challenge

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon at the hands of Daemen at the East Region Challenge presented by WNY Knee and Orthopedic Surgery PC.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Saint Anselm struggled shooting and went just 15 for 56 from the floor (26.8 percent), while Daemen shot very well from the field by making 39 of their 70 shots (55.7 percent).
  • 11 of the 15 made field goals for the Hawks were from three-point range. The Hawks shot 11 for 29 from deep (37.9 percent) compared to 14 made threes out of 28 (50.0 percent) by the Wildcats.
  • Saint Anselm made 14 of their 18 free throw attempts (77.8 percent), while Daemen made all four of their shots at the stripe.
  • Daemen dominated the battle on the glass with 45 rebounds compared to 27 rebounds by Saint Anselm. The Wildcats grabbed 11 offensive rebounds compared to eight offensive boards hauled in by the Hawks.
  • The Wildcats outscored the Hawks in the paint, 42-6, in fastbreak points, 24-9, and in second chance points, 16-1.
  • 12 different players scored for the Wildcats with five scoring in double figures. Daemen's bench outscored the Saint Anselm reserves, 48-20.
  • The Wildcats punished their opposition with 18 points off of 15 Hawks turnovers. The Hawks scored just six points off of 12 giveaways by the Wildcats.
  • Defensively, Saint Anselm had four steals and four blocks, while Daemen had seven steals and three blocks.
  • Junior Josh Morissette (Exeter, N.H.) led Saint Anselm with 15 points (4-10 FG, 4-8 3PT, 3-3 FT). Senior Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland) added 11 points (2-8 FG, 1-2 3PT, 6-7 FT) and four rebounds. Junior Juju Ramirez (Lawrence, Kan.) contributed nine points, a game-high three blocks, and two steals.
  • Matt Becker, who played three seasons at Saint Anselm before graduating last spring, led Daemen with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds against his former team. The Wildcats had five players register double digits in the scoring category.
  • Morissette and Becker were both named to the East Region Challenge All-Tournament team for their performances across two games. Morissette averaged 14 points and six rebounds per game while making seven total three-pointers.
  • This marked the fifth all-time meeting between these two programs. Saint Anselm falls to 1-4 overall against Daemen in the series that began in 2019.
