Men's Ice Hockey Wins Buffalo State Bengals Classic on Blaney's Overtime Winner

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College men's ice hockey team defeated Buffalo State by a final score of 4-3 on Saturday evening to win the Buffalo State Bengals Men's Hockey Classic. Senior Mark Blaney (Braintree, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal 56 seconds into overtime, while junior Luke Linart (Holland, Mich.) sent the game to the extra frame by scoring the game-tying goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm held a 35-29 advantage in shots on goal during the game. The Hawks recorded double digit shot totals in each period.
  • The battle at the faceoff dot was very even with Saint Anselm winning 34 of 71 (47.9 percent) and Buffalo State winning 37 of 71 (52.1 percent).
  • Senior Max Burum (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Hawks with 12 faceoff wins out of 23 attempts (52.2 percent), while junior Cam Collins (Raynham, Mass.) led the Hawks in faceoff percentage by winning 10 out of his 14 draws (71.4 percent).
  • On the defensive side, both teams blocked six shots in the contest.
  • The Hawks and the Bengals each went 0/2 on the power play. Saint Anselm registered nine shots on goal during the man advantage, while Buffalo State recorded just three.
  • Blaney, Collins, Linart, and senior Luke Mix (Winchester, Mass.) all scored their first goals of the season for the Hawks. Blaney's goal was the third game-winner in his career.
  • Senior Hunter Brackett (Fort, Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied two assists on the evening, including the helper on the game-winning goal in overtime. Freshmen Conor Kelly (Braintree, Mass.) and Brendan Manning (Chandler, Ariz.) both picked up their first collegiate assist in their first collegiate game for Saint Anselm.
  • Joonas Linnavuori, Sutton Murray, and Ethan Perrault all scored for Buffalo State.
  • Sophomore goaltender Cam Carroll (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) posted 26 saves in goal for the Hawks, while Marcus Cumberworth made 32 stops between the pipes for the Bengals.
  • This marked the fourth all-time meeting between these two programs. The Hawks remain undefeated against the Bengals and improve to 2-0-2 in the series that began in 2012.
