GWYNN OAK, Md. – Over the weekend, the Saint Anselm College women's bowling team competed at the Coppin State Lady Eagles Invitational where they matched up against several NCAA Division I opponents. The Hawks came away with four wins across the two-day event to finish in eighth place out of 16 teams and now boast a 19-31 record this season.

On Saturday, Saint Anselm started off hot with consecutive victories in traditional play over Virginia Union, 970-706, and host team Coppin State, 905-781. That 970 score against Virginia Union was a new program-high series and in that game, sophomore Callie Goulet (Bellingham, Mass.) and freshman Ashlee Hess (Fort Loramie, Ohio) led the Hawks with 214 and 212 scores, respectively.

The Hawks closed out the afternoon with tight losses to Norfolk State, Fayetteville State, and Howard to wrap up traditional play.

On day one, Saint Anselm was led by senior Madison Gentes (Bedford, N.H.) who knocked down 917 pins across five games. That was good for 32nd place out of 110 bowlers and an average score of 183.40. Hess and freshman Katy McNemar (Chambersburg, Pa.) also finished in the top half for Saint Anselm during the first day of competition. McNemar finished day one in 45th place after knocking down 870 pins for a 174.00 average score, while Hess came in 48th place after wiping out 847 pins for an average score of 169.40.

On Sunday, Saint Anselm competed in four baker matches and earned two more wins. The team opened up the afternoon with back-to-back triumphs over Delaware State, 940-841, and Virginia State, 943-645, but then fell to Howard and Dominican (N.Y.) in best-of-seven baker matches.

During Sunday's competition, Saint Anselm shot a 257 game against Virginia State, which was a new program record. The Hawks were also able to climb out of 12th place to finish in seventh after qualifying rounds before ending the tournament in eighth.

"We hit a goal of ours to finish in the top seven teams after qualifying," said head coach Tim Frye '11. "We corrected mistakes we had Saturday on Sunday, which aided our success. We continue to make steady progress as a program, and we expect to create another positive outcome as we head out to Buffalo this coming weekend."
