HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm came out of the gates flying with five of the game's first six shot attempts. That offensive pressure paid off with Cordeiro lighting the lamp for his first collegiate tally less than three minutes in off a feed from senior Will van der Veen (Duxbury, Mass.) to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
  • Nearly two minutes later, van der Veen doubled the home team's lead with his first goal of the season that came on a snipe from the point to make it 2-0. Senior Chase Reynolds (Middletown, Conn.) picked up the assist on the play.
  • The Hawks were then given a power play after a cross-checking penalty assessed to the Raiders. Goaltender Luke Newell came up big for the visitors with a couple of saves during the penalty kill to keep his team down by just a pair.
  • Rivier then went on a power play of their own following a too many men penalty called on Saint Anselm. Jake Laville and Jon Tavella set up Nicolas Paolucci for a power play goal with eight minutes remaining in the first to make it a 2-1 game.
  • Newell was forced to make four more saves before the end of the first period to keep the score at 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
  • Just 1:31 into the second period, Laville tied the score at 2-2 for the Raiders with Cormac Hayes and Damon Kiyawasew picking up assists.
  • Midway through the period, Rivier took the lead thanks to an even-strength tally by Carter Poulin, which made it a 3-2 score.
  • After conceding the go-ahead goal, Saint Anselm started to get back into rhythm late in the second period. Senior Hunter Brackett (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) rang a shot off the pipe. The Hawks then earned a power play, but were unable to convert as the second period ended at 3-2.
  • Saint Anselm tied the game up at 3-3 just 1:25 into the third on the first goal of the season by junior Garrett Alberti (Wilmington, Mass.). He slapped home a loose puck that was bouncing out in front to provide the home team with a much-needed answer after allowing three unanswered goals.
  • The Hawks looked to be in full control and earned another power play after three more shots on goal, but Kiyawasew broke loose and finished off a short-handed score to give the Raiders the 4-3 lead with 14:32 to play.
  • Rivier started to generate more scoring opportunities in search of an insurance goal. The Raiders put four shots on goal, but all were stopped by Hawks sophomore goaltender Cam Carroll (Putnam, Valley, N.Y.) to keep his team down by a goal with under 10 minutes left.
  • Over the next three minutes of game time, Saint Anselm fired eight pucks on frame. Newell turned aside the first seven, but on the eighth, junior John Myers (White Plains, N.Y.) broke through with his first goal of the year to tie it up at 4-4 with just over five minutes remaining.
  • Less than a minute later, Laville gave his team the lead back on an unassisted goal after a power move to the net to make it 5-4.
  • The Hawks pulled their goalie for the extra skater to try and force overtime, but the Raiders sealed the game after an empty net goal by Kiyawasew made it 6-4.
