HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Kylie Miranto created the first scoring chance of the match with a shot on goal for Daemen a little over two minutes in, but Saint Anselm freshman goalkeeper Samantha Swidorski (Woodbury, Minn.) made her first save of the afternoon. Miranto attempted another shot for the Wildcats in the 11th minute, but it was off target.
- At the other end, the Hawks got their offense going with several chances around the box. Fifth-year senior Tara McCleary and senior Josie Pecor (Williston, Vt.) both put shots on goal, but were denied by Daemen goalkeeper Becca Schultz.
- Swidorski made her second stop of the game a few minutes later, hauling in a shot from Lauren Cuisia of the Wildcats to keep the game scoreless.
- Saint Anselm started to take over after that, outshooting Daemen 7-0 over the next dozen minutes while also earning four corner kicks. Senior Sydney Wnek (Haverhill, Mass.) and juniors Emma Catanzarite (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Nina Cuccovia (East Longmeadow, Mass.) all had shots saved by Schultz, while Pecor rang a shot off the left post during that sequence.
- Daemen responded well and ended the half with three consecutive shots, but only one from Ramone Trentin was on frame. Swidorski was able to make that save and the game remained 0-0 at halftime.
- Four minutes into the second half, Pecor opened the scoring after finishing a corner kick sent in by Rutherford to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
- Rutherford also put a shot on goal in the 52nd minute, but Schultz corralled it for another save.
- The Wildcats tried to respond with a pair of corners along with two shots by Magda Carpenter, but they were unable to break through.
- Saint Anselm got control of the game shortly after with McCleary and senior Riley DiGilio (Danvers, Mass.) registering shots on target, but Schultz kept her team down by just a goal with two more stops.
- The Hawks were given another corner kick in the 73rd minute and made the most of that opportunity with their second goal of the day. Rutherford sent in another inswinging, left-footed service and this time, Deneen got on the end of it and placed it into the back of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
- Saint Anselm held Daemen without a shot on goal over the final 17 minutes of play, allowing them to secure the 2-0 non-conference victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
