Hawks Fight Through Five But Fall to Pace, 3-2

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Saint Anselm College women's volleyball team battle through five but fell in the final set on Friday night to Pace University, 3-2 925-23, 25-19, 15-25, 14-25, & 8-15).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Anselm come out the first set ready for action, taking a 6-1 lead with kills from Melis Kocak (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Taylor Lacerda (Franklin, Mass.). The Hawks run would continue taking a 15-7 lead with Lacerda tallying a service ace and Hollyn Frano (Cave Creek, Ariz.) and Sam Pila (Melbourne, Australia) kills. The Setters would find a late run to bringing them within three, 16-19, with four kills being notched by the team. Kills from Frano and Lacerda would keep the Hawks three-point lead but the home team would make a final stance behind a kill from Daniella Abbastante but would fall on an attack error from Brynnley Bryant 25-13.
  • The second set began at an even pace with Frano and Lacerda continuing to lead Saint Anselm's offensive strike. The Hawks put together a 6-0 run to take a 12-6 advantage off of a pair of Abigail Macalaguim (Chula Vista, Calif.) service aces. In the latter half of the set the Hawks would continue to maintain their advantage, 18-12, with Kocak and Lacerda exchanging kills. The Setters attempted their last run with a triple threat of kills, but a Frano response silenced the comeback and sealed the Hawks win 25-19.
  • The winds shifted completely in the third set of play as the Setters would take a quick 10-1 lead as a combination of strong serves and swings backed up the home team. Lacerda would attempt a response midway through the set tabbing another service ace and pair of kills, but Pace did not let off of the gas. The home team extended their lead to 22-11 tallying kills and capitalizing off of errors from the Hawks. Kocak scored the final point for the Hawks before the Setters took victory 25-15.
  • The four set began as the second, with Frano and Kocak exchanging kills with the Pace hitters keeping it within a point. A 6-1 Pace run would open the set up as Yasmeen Muhammad continued to serve well for the Setters. Saint Anselm would be able to string three points together bringing the sore to 15-9, but the home continued to rally for a fifth set. Pila tallied on last kill before a kill from Abbastante finalized the 25-14 victory.
  • The Setters continued into the fifth set taking a 7-1 lead behind five kills and two service aces. Frano stunted the run with another kill for the Hawks, but the Setters continued to a 12-4 lead. The Hawks tallied another 3-0 run behind a pair of kills from Macalaguim, but the home team took home the come from behind win 15-8, 3-2.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Frano led the offensive attack for the Hawks finishing with 15 kills, 10 digs and one service ace. Lacerda followed behind with 13 kills, eight digs and two service aces.
  • Macalaguim kept the streak of filling the stats for the team tabbing 34 assists, 12 digs, a pair of kills, and three service aces.
  • Defensively, Madeline Burke (Lake George, N.Y.) led the way tallying 13  total digs, three assists and one service ace.
  • As a team, Saint Anselm finished the match with 46 kills, 53 digs, and seven service aces.
