HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Michael's generated the first scoring chances of the game with a corner kick and a shot on goal by Marshall Butler, but junior goalkeeper David Hood (Manchester, N.H.) made the save for Saint Anselm.
  • The two sides trades shots and corners midway through the opening half, but were unable to find the back of the net. Leader came close to scoring for the Hawks in the 21st minute after a through ball was played to him in the box, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.
  • With just over five minutes left in the first half, senior Michael Provenzano (Stratham, N.H.) clipped a ball over the Saint Michael's back line. Senior Andrew Kubinski (Norton, Mass.) chased it down and was in a good position to shoot in the penalty box, but his shot was stopped by Purple Knights goalkeeper Garrett Smith.
  • Hood was forced to make one final save in the first half with under two minutes remaining by Ronnie Riby-Williams of Saint Michael's.
  • The Purple Knights created the first two scoring opportunities early in the second half. In the 50th minute, a cross was curled into the box that found Butler on the back post. He headed the ball towards goal, but Hood made a diving save to his left to keep it scoreless. Diego Aplicano let one fly from outside the box a few minutes later, but his shot floated just over the crossbar.
  • Shortly after that, Provenzano stole the ball in the attacking half and played a pass forward to Leader, who turned and fired from the top of the box, but Smith was good for another stop.
  • With a half hour left in the match, Xolo Miralles attempted a shot off a direct free kick from long distance for Saint Michael's, but Hood snagged it out of the air for another save.
  • After over two thirds of the match had played out without any goals, Dresens opened the scoring for Saint Anselm in the 70th minute. Freshman Chance Prouty (Danvers, Mass.) intercepted the ball in the attacking third and pushed a pass ahead to the top of the box for Dresens, who blasted a left-footed half volley into the top right corner.
  • The Purple Knights nearly answered in the 78th minute after Aliou Cisse delivered a bouncing cross into the box, but Alessandro Pescina scuffed the shot, allowed Hood to make a comfortable save.
  • Leader sealed the game for the Hawks in the 85th minute with a special individual effort that made it 2-0. Senior Lucas Bravo Ollé (Sitges, Barcelona, Spain) made a sliding play to knock a loose ball ahead for Leader, who turned and sliced through two defenders before finishing into the lower left corner.
  • Saint Anselm did well managing the rest of the game and earned three corner kicks to help drain the rest of the clock on the way to their 2-0 victory.
