HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After Adelphi got out to a 5-0 start, junior Sean McCarthy (Cork, Ireland) carved his way into the paint and finished a layup before knocking down a three-pointer on the following possession to tie the score.
  • The Panthers continued to create close-range scoring opportunities and capitalized, extending their lead to 13-6, but McCarthy answered time and time again for the Hawks as he scored the first 12 points of the game for Saint Anselm to make it just a 15-12 Adelphi lead. The Ireland native drilled another long range shot midway through the first half to cut the deficit to just one point, 16-15.
  • Junior Zac Taylor (Victoria, Australia) provided scoring off the bench, cashing in on a three-ball to keep the Hawks within striking distance. A 5-0 mini run by fifth-year Tyler Arbuckle (Bristol, Conn.) made it just a 30-28 Adelphi lead with 3:26 in the half.
  • Not to be out done was sophomore Josh Morissette (Exeter, N.H.), who converted on a pair of free throws and buried a three-pointer as well to trim the Panther lead to just 34-33. However, Adelphi closed the first half on a 6-2 run and took a 40-35 advantage into halftime.
  • The Panthers came out of the locker room on fire to open the second half courtesy of a 22-8 scoring run spearheaded by Lewis, who poured in 11 points on three made threes during that stretch. Adelphi increased their lead to 23 points on a slam dunk from Lewis to make it 68-45 at the 11:37 mark of the second half.
  • The Panthers kept their lead at 20 points or more for the next eight minutes of game time. The Hawks ended the game on a 16-2 run led by one three pointer each from Taylor, senior Matt Becker (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Jack Reardon (Munster, Ind.), but it was not enough to complete the comeback and Adelphi earned the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Anselm struggled offensively, shooting 21 of 58 (36.2%) from the floor while making eight of 21 (38.1%) from behind the arc. Adelphi made 32 of their 67 attempts (47.8%) from the field and knocked down seven of their 22 shots (31.8%) from long distance.
  • The Panthers out-rebounded the Hawks by a 43-31 margin, including 12 offensive rebounds, but the Hawks held a 9-4 edge in steals and a 6-3 advantage in blocked shots.
  • The difference in the game came in the paint, with Adelphi scoring 48 points in that area compared to just 18 from Saint Anselm. Both teams shot above 80% from the foul line.
  • McCarthy led the Hawks with 24 points (8-17 FG, 2-3 3PT, 6-8 FT) and seven rebounds. Arbuckle was the only other Hawk in double figure scoring with 10 points. Becker added nine points and eight rebounds, while Morissette and Taylor also added nine points apiece.
  • Lewis paced Adelphi with 34 points and shot 6-9 from beyond the arc. Dayshaun Walton and Andrew Delaney finished with 12 and 10 points for the Panthers, respectively.
  • This marked the 38th all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Adelphi, with the Hawks falling to 22-16 overall against the Panthers and suffering their first head-to-head defeat since 2019.
