Women's Basketball Drops Conference Game to Saint Rose, 50-43

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Saint Anselm College women's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game to The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday evening by a final score of 50-43. The Hawks fall to a 3-5 conference record while the Golden Knights earn their fifth NE10 victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Katie Lemanski (Haymarket, Va.) got the Hawks on the scoreboard first after making 1-of-2 free throw shots to kick start the contest. Saint Anselm's defense posted three early defensive rebounds after the Golden Knights went 0-for-5 from the floor to start the game. Lemanski connected with fifth-year Liv Robles ( ) quickly in the first quarter who finished two baskets to put the Hawks ahead 5-0. Syrtia Faraj answered for Saint Rose at the 6:14 mark hitting a three-pointer to make it 5-3.
  • Shortly after, sophomore Tatum Forbes (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored her first points of the game with a good driving layup. Saint Rose then went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-7 advantage over Saint Anselm. Two good free throw attempts from Robles followed by a floating jump shot by Forbes helped the Hawks regain a two-point lead, but Faraj would even the score with her basket to end the first quarter tied 11-11.
  • The Golden Knights jumped ahead 13-11 with a good jumper by Payton Graber to start the second quarter. Sophomore Harmony Marquez ( ) made her way to the free throw line finishing 1-of-2 shots to cut Saint Rose's lead to just one point. After the Golden Knights went up 16-12, sophomore Melanie Hoyt ( ) buried two free throw attempts to make it 16-14 with four minutes left in the first half, respectively. Saint Rose would head into halftime up 23-16 thanks to a late 7-2 push in the second quarter.  
  • Forbes kicked off the scoring in the third quarter for Saint Anselm by draining two three-point shots to make it 26-22. She continued to pour in the next seven points for the Hawks giving the squad a 29-26 advantage near the midway point of the quarter. After Hoyt finished a jump shot off the assist from Forbes, Maddisyn Mahoney scored the next five points for the Golden Knights to give Saint Rose a 33-31 lead with 2:20 left in the quarter. Forbes was able to tie the game at 33-33 with a layup, her 12th point of the quarter, but Saint Rose would finish a late basket to go ahead 35-33 at the end of quarter three.
  • Aniya McDonald extended Saint Rose's lead to 39-35 after making a layup and two free-throw attempts at the start of the fourth quarter. She later added another two points for the Golden Knights with 6:03 left in the game to make it 41-35. Junior Alexa Quirolo (New Rochelle, N.Y. ) buried back-to-back triples with less than five minutes remaining in the game to close the score gap to just four points. Saint Rose would seal their win after going 5-for-10 at the charity stripe in the final two minutes of the quarter to defeat the Hawks by a final score of 50-43.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Saint Rose shot 37.8 percent from the floor after making 17-of-45 shot attempts in the game while Saint Anselm went 16-for-48 (33.3%). The Hawks drained four three-pointers in comparison to the Golden Knights with just two made shots from behind the arc.
  • The Golden Knights held a 35-29 edge in total rebounds, featuring 27 defensive boards, as well as points in the paint by a 22-18 margin.  
  • Saint Anselm capitalized on fast break chances scoring 11 points in comparison to Saint Rose with just four points.
  • Forbes led Saint Anselm with 23 points (10-20 FG, 2-9 3FG, 1-1 FT) to go along with seven, two assists, and five steals. Robles ended the game with eight points (3-10 FG, 2-2 FT) as well as three rebounds and a steal. Hoyt led the team with 10 rebounds (5-5)
  • Faraj led Saint Rose with 14 points (4-11 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 4-4 FT) followed by Mahoney with 11 points (5-9 FG, 1-3 FT) and seven rebounds.
  • This marked the 31st all-time meeting between Saint Anselm and Saint Rose, with the Golden Knights improving to 18-13 in the series.
