HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams got out to a slow start offensively with the game's first basket coming two and a half minutes following the opening tip off. Robles tied the score at 2-2 on a midrange jumper for Saint Anselm's first basket of the afternoon.
  • New Haven countered with a 7-0 scoring stretch to go ahead 9-2 before Forbes got to the rim for a close range finish to stop the Charger run. Forbes also connected on another two point field goal to beat the buzzer as the Hawks trailed, 10-8, at the end of a low-scoring first quarter.
  • Three consecutive made field goals by Hoyt helped Saint Anselm start the second quarter strongly and take their first lead of the game at 14-11. With under 2:35 on the clock, junior Katie Lemanski (Haymarket, Va.) scored four straight points for the Hawks including a pair of free throws, but Aurora Deshaies converted on a buzzer-beating layup to give the Chargers a narrow 23-22 lead at halftime.
  • After falling behind, 28-24 early in the third quarter, Robles knocked down the first three pointer of the game for the Hawks to pull her team within a point. The fifth-year's layup on the next possession gave Saint Anselm back the lead at 29-28.
  • Another hot streak by Hoyt midway through the third helped Saint Anselm extend their lead to five points. The junior knocked down shots on three straight possessions, forcing a New Haven timeout with 3:45 remaining in the quarter. Forbes was able to drill another buzzer-beating shot, this time from behind the arc, as the Hawks led by three points going into the fourth.
  • Following a steal by sophomore Anna Nelson (Gorham, Maine), Forbes was able to convert on the other end, knocking down a shot while being fouled. Her free throw made it a 43-37 Saint Anselm lead, and two free throws by Lemanski on the next trip down the floor gave the Hawks their largest lead of the game at eight points.
  • Nayeli Dowling cashed home a jumper for the Chargers to make it just a one point Hawks lead with 3:41 remaining, but another made triple from Robles helped Saint Anselm maintain a comfortable four point advantage.
  • New Haven got the ball back down by three points with 11 seconds left, but Hoyt came up big for the Hawks once again, this time on the defensive end, as she blocked a Deshaies three-point attempt as time expired to seal the Saint Anselm win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
